If you are a student from the non-european Economic Area (EEA), you are required to obtain a residence permit, and after your arrival in Hungary you need to register your accommodation.
Keeping your stay legal EEA students Report to the Office of Immigration and Asylum Obtain a Registration Card Within 90 days after your arrival latest Make sure you have all required documents, so you won t have to go back More information: Please see your Welcome Package
Keeping your stay legal Non-EEA students Report to the Office of Immigration and Asylum Obtain your Residence Permit ASAP Within 30 days after your arrival latest Make sure you have all required documents, so you won t have to go back
Keeping your stay legal The Residence Permit
Keeping your stay legal The Residence Permit
Keeping your stay legal The Temporary Residence Permit When your residence permit expires, the old (invalid) one will be revoked, and a temporary residence permit for a short period of time (usually for one month) will be given to you. In case you apply for the extension of your residence permit and your request is denied, you will be able to file an appeal (= a response to the negative decision, in which you explain that you disagree with the decision) against the decision of the authorities. Until the final decision is made you will be a holder of a temporary residence permit. It is two-sided paper card. Always keep it on your person.
Keeping your stay legal Non-EEA students, always keep in mind: Clarify student status (active or passive) Keep us informed at all times about changes Do not be active while staying away from school for any reason Report all emergencies affecting your status Request information from us if you have any doubts or questions Do not be in a passive status for more than two consecutive semesters (if you do so, your status at the university will be suspended / terminated, and you will risk losing your right to stay in Hungary) Always pay your tuition fees by bank transfer, in euros, and until the deadline, in one sum (no payment in parts) always means always! Do not violate the university s academic regulations and otherwise
Keeping your stay legal Active vs. Passive It is important that you clarify your student status during the registration period of each academic year. You can activate yourself on your own from your second semester on. If you are staying in Hungary as a student admitted by the Faculty of Humanities of ELTE, it is compulsory for you to keep DIA informed about your desired status. In case you need to leave Hungary temporarily (due to a medical emergency in your home country), it is your duty to inform us about your departure. It is strictly forbidden to have an active status while you do not attend any of your classes. Students who are active and do not attend classes will be reported to the Office of Immigration and Asylum after careful consideration.
