OUTLIERS by Malcolm Gladwell A Study of Argument, Reasoning & Application

Argument from Introduction: The world we inhabit and the people we surround ourselves with have a profound effect on who we are, including our health. (p. 11) vs.

Supporting Points 1) A group of Italians immigrated to the US and established the town of Roseto in PA, mimicking the characteristics of their life in Italy. 2) Dr. Wolf met with a local physician who said, I rarely find anyone from Roseto under the age of sixty-five with heart disease. At the time(1950s) heart attacks were the leading cause of death in US men under the age of 65. A medical study in Roseto of EKG and blood work confirmed the physician s claim.

Supporting Points (cont d) 3) Roseto also had no suicide, no alcoholism, no drug addiction, no ulcers, very little crime and no one on welfare. 4) Studies ruled out diet, exercise, genes and location as reasons for residents dying almost solely of old age. 5) How, then? Residents had transplanted the powerful culture of Southern Italy to PA and insulated themselves from the pressures of the modern world through extended families under one roof, constant interaction with neighbors, the unifying and calming effect of 100% attendance at mass, and an egalitarian ethos (people helped one another and did not attempt to distinguish themselves economically).

Welcome to our N.Y. HOOD We lived in Buffalo ( ) & Syracuse ( ) Our next door neighbor s son, Red, was stabbed by a gang member and his lung collapsed. I watched their baby while they were at the hospital. Tom, a combat injured Vietnam veteran who lived about 8 doors down from us was shot in his own driveway when he surprised a man who was robbing his home. A renter about 5 houses down shot and killed a man point blank. A neighbor kid ID d him; SWAT team invaded our street to make the arrest. There was a gang fight in front of our house. Two doors down, a teenager named Amnon smoked laced marijuana and suffered irreparable brain damage. Janon. My son was mugged while waiting for a bus. I was carjacked by a drug addict, forced to drive into a slum hand over money. Our new snow blower was stolen from our garage.

Welcome to Roy! No crime in my neighbor. No interrupted sleep. Administration cares about its teachers. Expectations are realistic. Teachers care about one another. English & Library Dept. members have eaten lunch together for years. English & Library Dept. members attend events together such as Tuacahn and other plays and movies. In general, people have been neighborly, friendly and caring.

Health Effect NEW YORK: Stress responses Grinding teeth Jaw locking up Back pain Sleeplessness UTAH: All of these problems completely ended within 6 months of living in Utah

Assignment For each chapter, the group must summarize and present (one sentence) the author s argument. The group must also outline 4 or 5 main points. Each person in group must create a unique application of your assigned chapter s argument to yourself or someone in a similar situation (same age or family size or health condition or skill, etc.) You must have some sort of evidence for this personal application (anecdote, statistics, etc.)

End Product BE CREATIVE! ADD VISUALS! BE ENGAGING! PowerPoint/Google Slides/Google Pages/Prezi Present it like a news show Present it like an interview Write information on poster boards and have each member use that information Everyone must participate!

Rubric & Schedule 10 points 8 points 5 points Argument Correct Close Incorrect but tried Main Points Correct Close Incorrect but tried Application All applicable ¾ applicable ½ applicable Preparedness & Creativity Visually appealing, well prepared Decent effort but inconsistent In Class Today: Randomly select chapters. Groups choose methodology for presentation. Assign everyone a role. Mostly text, hesitant, some disconnect Today s Homework: Read your chapter. Write the argument. Outline supporting points. Create your personal application. Next class: Check homework (15 points). Group work day. Practice. Two classes from today: Presentations (in chapter order)
