1 Art and Culture Center of Hollywood Distance Learning Integrated Art Lesson Title: Multi-colored-cultural Collage Description and Overall Focus: The purpose of this lesson is to teach students about the social and political need for United Nations. Primary focus will be placed on humanitarian works and the importance of the concepts of knowing about, understanding, and identifying with other people in the world while caring about their needs. These concepts will be implicit in the creation of a multicolored assemblage of world geography on a heartshaped ground. Length of Lesson Grade Range 45 minutes Upper Elementary School Middle School Objective(s) Materials: PLEASE NOTE - Some materials must be acquired prior to this lesson. There are extras on pages 5 & 6: Word Bubble and Coloring Page. This lesson will teach students how to create a work of art concerning empathy and identity. Students will relate the their prior knowledge of attending school and coexisting with children from different cultures, as well as to infer that we are all more or less the same through our humanity. Students will adapt these ideas into an artful collage with meaning. Teacher Supplies: Printed continent sheets in several colors to mix by students. Sheets of colored paper (background) Student Supplies: Scissors Stick glue (or liquid glue)

2 Introductory activity Core activity Closure activity Assessment Teacher follow-up idea Student follow-up idea Book/Web references Students will begin by learning a brief history of the UN (United Nations) and the establishment of humanitarian efforts around the world. Students will then briefly discuss why they think the aforementioned issues are important, and associate how color and shape can be meaningful in the expression of ideas. Students will begin by choosing their colored continents. They will continue by superimposing their knowledge of Earth s continents onto a heart-shaped background. Students will complete their creations making sure that the pieces are secured properly together. Several students will then share their work to have a fun and constructive art critique! The Students will have learned about the formation of the UN, the establishment of world humanitarian efforts, and organizations around the world. In addition, they will have experienced how color and shape can embody symbolic meaning: How art can be a positive message. The classroom teacher can use the websites and list below to present more of the information surrounding the UN, diplomacy, humanitarian issues and even activism in order to plan a new lesson. Students can continue to create progressively more sophisticated works of art concerning humanitarian issues that affect them in their own city, school or neighborhood This Child, Every Child: A Book About the World s Children by David J. 3 Q: What is the UN? A: The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945 after the Second World War by 51 countries committed to maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations and promoting social progress, better living standards and human rights for a safer world for this and future generations." bring assistance and relief to millions. Attention is brought to humanitarian needs worldwide, and the importance of international cooperation. Every year, disasters cause immense suffering for millions of people usually the world's poorest, most marginalized, and vulnerable individuals. Every day, humanitarian aid workers stand on the front lines of war and disaster, braving tremendous dangers and difficulties to deliver assistance to those who need it most. In December 2008, the sixty-third session of the UN General Assembly decided to designate August 19 as World Humanitarian Day in order to recognize the aid workers who risk their lives in humanitarian service, and mobilize people to advocate for humanitarian action. Humanitarian aid workers strive to provide lifesaving assistance and long term rehabilitation to disaster-affected communities, regardless of where they are in the world and without discrimination based on nationality, social group, religion, sex, race or any other factor. Aid is based on a number of founding principles, including humanity, impartiality, neutrality and independence.

4 Organizations, such as CARE, The Red Cross, UNICEF, Doctors Without Borders, and OXFAM What can WE do?? CARE CARE is one of the world's largest private international humanitarian organizations, committed to helping families in poor communities improve their lives and achieve lasting victories over poverty. Founded in 1945 to provide relief to survivors of World War II, CARE quickly became a trusted vehicle for the compassion and generosity of millions. Doctors Without Borders Doctors Without Borders delivers medical help to populations endangered by war, civil strife, epidemics or natural disasters. Each year over 2,000 volunteer doctors representing 45 nationalities work worldwide in front-line hospitals, refugee camps, disaster sites, towns and villages providing primary health care, performing surgery, vaccinating children, operating emergency nutrition and sanitation programs and training local medical staff. International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) The IFRC is one part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, which comprises National Red Cross or Red Crescent Societies, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (the Federation), and the ICRC. The IFRC is the permanent liaison body of the National Societies and acts as their representative internationally. It organizes and coordinates international disaster response in support of the actions of the affected National Societies, encourages the creation of

5 new National Societies and assists them in developing their structures and programs. The IFRC Secretariat in Geneva is staffed by more than 245 people of some 30 different nationalities. OXFAM Oxfam is a development and relief agency working to end poverty. Oxfam International is a confederation of 12 organizations working together with over 3,000 partners in more than 100 countries to find lasting solutions to poverty, suffering and injustice. United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) While working to ensure the survival, protection and development of children and advocating a high priority for them in the allocation of resources at all times, UNICEF continues to give relief and rehabilitation assistance in emergencies. The agency was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in For others visit:
