3 COMING TO GODZONE KIWI FUTURES Kiwi Futures (extracts) TVNZ Duration 5.35 Historian Jamie Belich tackles the immigration theme with reference to his own Dalmatian family history and the human and social reasons for moving to New Zealand, before World War Two. Starring roles for Winston Peters and Jim Anderton. MOTHERCRAFT Weekly Review 248 (extracts) National Film Unit Duration 0.35 LEARNING MOTHERCRAFT: Girls learn to wash babies in a school classroom. "Some give up the idea of a career in favour of marriage and home". What is interesting in immigration terms here is the comment: "something important these days when population means much to New Zealand." At various times in New Zealand's history immigration was actively encouraged to boost structural and economic development. Many immigrants were assisted, fares paid or subsidised. However, age, gender, and occupational status were taken into account, as well as the ever present preference for British stock. CHAIN IMMIGRATION THE ITALIANS HAPUKA FISHING 1925 Hapuka Fishing in New Zealand (extract) NZ Govt. Publicity Office Duration 1.45 Silent footage of Italian Fishermen working off Island Bay, Wellington. The small but thriving community of Italian fishing families at Island Bay is an example of chain immigration. Most of these families and individuals came from two specific fishing villages in southern Italy, some of each generation remain in Italy, some joined their relatives in Island Bay. Only a few have returned, but those here still maintain their Italian identity, as well as their New Zealand identity. One of the fishermen shown in this early piece is Joe Volpicelli,

4 resident of Island Bay and then Makara around the coast, a skilled fisherman, tenor and accordion player! Joe fought in World War One on the Allied side (the Italian Army), and was under a strict curfew (basically police supervision) during World War Two, when Italy was allied to Germany. Joe died in 1994 aged 100 years. His children, grandchildren and probably great-great grand children still live in Wellington. THE UNBROKEN THREAD Immigrant Nation: The Unbroken Thread (extracts) Top Shelf Productions Duration The Italians of Island Bay Wellington, from two villages in Southern Italy, Stromboli and Massa Lubrense. The features of cultural continuity: language, generational change and specifics on the World War Two experiences of Italians in New Zealand. THE LEBANESE CHILDREN OF LEBANON Children of Lebanon (extracts) Morningside Productions Duration 5.54 Different generations of Lebanese immigrants talk about their New Zealand experience, hospitality and the special place of their families and culture in their lives. A mixture of chain and refugee migration form the New Zealand Lebanese story. Repeated in the REFUGEES menu. ASSISTED PASSAGE ARRIVAL OF THE ATLANTIS Weekly Review 387 (extract) National Film Unit Duration 0.58 WELLINGTON...NEW ARRIVALS: After a refit in England, the ship Atlantis arrives in Wellington Harbour under the charter of the New Zealand Government with 900 people on board. 750 are assisted immigrants and the remainder are sponsored by the Government. The new immigrants represent 73 different occupations.

5 BRITISH IMMIGRANTS Weekly Review 315 (extract) National Film Unit Duration 1.48 Newcomers, British Immigrants Arrive: 118 government assisted immigrants arrive in Wellington. Most were in the armed forces during the war. Women are asked what they did before the war and what they plan to do in New Zealand. REFUGEES POLISH CHILDREN Weekly Review 169 National Film Unit Duration 8.10 Polish refugees arrive in Auckland on board a ship returning soldiers from the war in Egypt and Europe. 725 children and 113 adults board two trains for the last stage of their journey to accommodation near Pahiatua. On arrival they join in a service of remembrance for those from whom they were parted in their war torn homeland. Apart from assisted and planned immigration, another sector of immigrants began arriving during and after World War Two: displaced persons and political refugees from war-torn countries. Much of this immigration happened in co-operation with the International Refugee Organisation. WHERE'S MY YUGOSLAVIA Where's My Yugoslavia? (extract) Morningside Productions Duration 4.12 Refugees from Kosovo are recent, Bosnian refugees have been here a while longer, but immigrants from Yugoslavia have been here for generations, particularly from the region of Dalmatia (part of Croatia today). Many of the early Dalmatian immigrants were male, evading conscription into the Austro- Hungarian army for an empire they had no allegiance to. TAMPA TV3 News 08/04/05 (extract) TV3 Network Duration 2.11 A happy moment for 76 Afghan refugees from the container ship The Tampa as they become New Zealand citizens. Compare Australia s treatment of the same and the electoral advantage procured by Howard.

6 PACIFIC IMMIGRATION AITUTAKI Heartland: Aitutaki (extracts) Anson Grieve Productions Duration 7.29 The New Zealand of today has a hugely altered demographic to the New Zealand of the 1960s. A major part of this is the large Pacific Island migration. There are more Niueans in New Zealand than on Niue. Pacific countries associated with New Zealand's colonial past have a significant presence in today's New Zealand society. These extracts look at the Cook Island presence in New Zealand, in particular the New Zealand based members of a village on Aitutaki called Vaipae. URBAN PASIFIKA Urban Pasifika: One Joe Lonie Duration 3.21 The music video for One by Urban Pasifika; New York and LA via South Auckland. Phil Fuemana of Urban Pasifika Records states the manifesto of the Urban Pasifika label - The criticism has been that we ve been pretty American, but we stopped apologising for that... we re not really islanders, we were born here, [New Zealand] in the city, we relate to the music here. The trick is to make the music sound like it is from here [so] someone from New York hears it [and thinks] wow, that must be from the pacific islands but still have that contemporary Hip-Hop R&B feel.
