WHO KNOWS? The first 3 words used by Urban Dictionary to describe Millennials Special little snowflake. 1
WHO KNEW? Millennial Generation Born: 1981 to to 35 years old in 2016 As defined by Pew Research
WHO KNEW? this generation is something special, cause Mom and Dad and their 5th grade teacher Mrs. Winotsky told them so. Plus they have a whole shelf of participation trophies sitting at home so it has to be true. 1
WHO KNEW? Generation Me narcissistic and self-absorbed Trophy Kids coddled with unrealistic expectations Transient jump from job to job, directionless Needy instant feedback and instant gratification 35% of Millennials self identify as GenX 2
WHO KNEW? Open Minded socially liberal regarding civil rights Tech-Savvy second nature, industry grew with them Energetic youthful, optimistic, and passionate Entrepreneurial start-up mentality, disruptive
WHO KNEW? Q Boomers GenX Millenials Labor Force (Millions)
WHO KNEW? Apr-16 Boomers GenX Millenials Population (Millions)
WHO KNEW? You ve Peaked! Baby Boomers 78.8 million 2018 (projected) GenX 65.8 million 2036 (projected) Millennials 81.1 million
Disruptive Behavior - Social Media - Shared Economy - Virtual Retail - Mobile Technology - Download/Stream - Politics
Reach. Attract. Retain.
Reach. Attract. Retain. What underlying drivers do you feel accurately or inaccurately lead to the negative stereotypes placed on Millennials?
Reach. Attract. Retain. Paint your ideal work environment what features would be in place to attract and engage you?
Reach. Attract. Retain. Describe an employment environment that would have you searching the Help Wanted ads on your lunch break?
Reach. Attract. Retain. What are some examples of practices you ve seen implemented that serve to retain or repel Millennials?
Takeaways 1. Recruit students that have chosen the industry before choosing you. - NAA collegiate partners - Start early - Educate anyone willing to listen
Takeaways 2. Location is important. - Employment may come second to location - Know your location and know how to sell it
Takeaways 3. Engagement and efficiency = productivity - Disengagement Laziness - May value variety in their job description - Technology: it s good for business and morale
Takeaways 4. Flexibility and autonomy = loyalty - What you do vs. Who you are - No boss looking over my shoulder - Entrepreneurship and intrepreneurship
Takeaways 5. Treat them like an investment - Millennials = Value-add investments - Set-the-stage vs. wait-and-see - You like progress reports and variance reports, why shouldn t they?
Generational or Just Age? some of these differences may be related more to age and life stage than to the unique characteristics of today s generations. Responsibilities tend to increase with age. As a result, it is possible that, in any era, older people would be more likely than younger people to view their generation as responsible. In addition, differences between old and young in such realms as patriotism, religiosity and political activism have been evident for many years. 2
