CONFERENCE BERLIN, 8 NOVEMBER 2013

The On Transparency conference is supported by: Chocolate bars provided by Laima. 2013 Transparency International. All rights reserved.

Transparency International s 20th anniversary is not only the anniversary of an organisation. It is the anniversary of an idea. The idea that corruption is a major global problem that can and must be stopped.

Not long ago corruption wasn t even talked about. Many people didn t see corruption as a problem or felt powerless to do anything about it. In 1993, a few dedicated individuals decided it was time for change and set up the world s first international anti-corruption organisation: Transparency International. A lot has happened since then: the creation of international anti-corruption laws, corrupt leaders brought to justice and their illicitly gained riches seized, national elections won and lost on tackling corruption, and companies held accountable for their behaviour at home and abroad. As we gather in Berlin to celebrate the milestones and achievements of the anti-corruption movement during the past 20 years and to take stock of the challenges ahead, we are joined by friends and colleagues from business, government, civil society, universities and the media. We come from countries around the world, but while our backgrounds might be diverse, we are united by a common goal. Our vision is a world in which government, politics, business, civil society and the daily lives of people are free from corruption. Looking ahead to the next 20 years, this conference seeks to turn this vision into reality.
