John has been a dedicated leader and mentor for members of the Spanish speaking community for the past 10 years. Through his professional work, as a social worker, he goes above and beyond to welcome new residents and make them feel welcome in their new home. In his personal time, he takes time to connect new immigrants with their cultural group, employment services, and finding important community services. He works close with government and the Local Immigration Partnership to advocate for further Spanish language services in Simcoe County and on an annual basis helps to bring cultural events and celebration to the Spanish speaking community. To fill this section out completely, please refer the "Award Criteria" document this gives examples and suggestions to what we are looking for. The more information the better! How has the work of the nominee improved opportunities for immigrants in their community or across Simcoe County? Please give examples. John has helped to support several families with finding affordable housing, suitable employment opportunities, and referrals to important programs and services throughout Simcoe County. He supported a single mother to go back to school and complete her degree. She is now working in the health field and contributing to the community. He hosts many social gatherings at his home that allows new and existing immigrants to meet and connect. Each Christmas he coordinates a traditional Spanish celebration which he invites members from all over Simcoe County. In this section, we are looking for opportunities that have increased (for immigrants) as a result of the nominee support? For example: has the nominee supported individuals to find new or suitable employment, introduced immigrants to valuable community organizations that were helpful or supportive, a volunteer experience, does the nominee advocate for new or enhanced services for immigrants in Simcoe County. We are looking for what is different in Simcoe County as a result of the nominees work with immigrants?

What strategies, steps, or innovative approaches were used by the nominee to enhance opportunities for newcomers? He takes the opportunity to meet and connect with local politicians and other community stakeholders to ensure that the community is aware of the challenges and benefits of immigrants coming to Simcoe County. He conducts outreach throughout the county and connects with local business passing along translated materials and service brochures - through these networking opportunities he has successfully matched members to job opportunities. In this section, we want to know how the nominee enhances opportunities for immigrants: For example: unique or new partnerships, community outreach, attends different community networks to spread the word, give presentations at service clubs.

In the fall of 2013, John was instrumental in supporting a local mental health agency to secure a grant that would support them in providing interpretative services to anyone who may face a language service barrier. John participates on the Local Immigration Partnership and brings forth the needs of the Spanish speaking community and then brings information back so members are aware of community service and programming and most importantly how to access programming - which may be different than their home country. Readiness is defined as: Strengthen basic public services to promote retention. For the application - we want to know how the nominee strengthens, develops, or enhanced services. How does the nominee prepare public services to be welcoming and inclusive to the immigrant population or immigrant clients? Opportunity Improve or promote career and employment opportunities for immigrants in Simcoe County. Through John's relationships with the separate school board, he has recommended two members for positions for their International Languages Program - both are former teachers in their home country and had been having a hard time finding employment in their field in Canada. Opportunity is defined as: Provide employment or business opportunities. How does the nominee support immigrants to find jobs, advance their careers, connect with employment services, with businesses that may require different skills sets that immigrants possess (ex. languages).

Celebrate Support the development of multiculturalism through festivals, activities, and events, in Simcoe County communities or organizations. John is on the executive committee that supports the development of "Celebrate Barrie" which is an annual celebration. For this year's event he has arranged for cultural entertainment traditional Flamenco performances. He also hosts several cultural activities through the church and in his own home that brings together various Latin cultures. Celebrate is defined as: supportive environment reflected through celebration of diversity. How does the nominee support multiculturalism or cultural diversity in Simcoe County? Inspire Empower immigrants to contribute to local leadership or an immigrant who is a leader in the community* *community defined as an area (city, town, or neighbourhood), or a group of people with same interests or commonalities (ex. race, religion, professional network). He has been most recently appointment to the chair position of a local labour board which strives to connect people with employment opportunities throughout Simcoe County. He is the first visible minority to be appointed to this position. He also encourages many youth members to become involved in leadership positions. He is an inspiring role model to all members. Inspire is defined as: Empower newcomers to contribute to local leadership capacity.
