` THE BENT TWIG A monthly newsletter of the American Bonsai Association of Sacramento April 2016 Tuesday April 26, Our meeting this month will feature Gordon Deeg as our guest speaker with a special demonstration on the Shohin Style. I found this article on-line at : https://bonsaitonight.com/2015/11/03/a-visit-to-gordon-deegs-garden/ Gordon is a familiar name to Northern California bonsai enthusiasts. He has served more positions in more bonsai organizations than I can count. A former Chairman of the Bonsai Garden at Lake Merritt, Gordon is now its Garden Master and a teacher at its bonsai school. Gordon is also responsible for another impressive bonsai garden his own. There are many great bonsai pictures included in the article. This meeting is absolutely a Must Attend. If that s not enough, our Pre-Meeting Workshop at 6:30 will cover pest control and soil health. These topics are just what we need for the busy spring season. This month Show and Tell will feature spring color, leaf out and of course Shohin.

At our last meeting Tuesday March 22, Member Ann Hultgren started off the Pre- Meeting Workshop with a wonderful talk and hands on demo about Accent Plants. As we know, Ann is our reigning queen on the topic. Many of our lucky members left with a new plant of their own. For the regular meeting, John covered the prescribed design criteria, pot selection and preferred dimension guidelines for Bonsai while Dino spiffed up a Coast Live Oak from his collection to be show ready. All topics were well received and very educational for all attendees. OUR BOARD President Dino Pappademos Vice President Renee Seely Treasurer Patti Fletcher Recording Secretary John Cota Corresponding Secretary Mark Mendenhall Members at large Steve Egan and Doc Ward, Michael McCurdy, Linda McCurdy.

57 th Annual ABAS Spring Show April 9 th & 10th by Renee Seely 2016, a year to remember! What a great show. There are so many people to thank. Our headliner, Peter Tea, presented two of the most interesting, informative, inspirational and entertaining demonstrations that I have ever seen. It was a full house both days. Peter kept the audience entertained and engaged for the entire 2 hours, a real accomplishment. Quality demonstration trees were transformed by his styling skill to reveal their potential for future works of art! Congratulations to the winners, Dan Balsley and Jill Willett. Peter s Saturday morning program, "Developing Observational Skills" and the Sunday morning show critique were educational, informative and so appreciated by members. Thank you Peter! I am so proud of all members who contributed their time and energy to make this one of our best shows ever! Thank you to all the members who prepared their trees so beautifully for the displays. And special Thanks to everyone who helped in so many ways to make this show a success: Carmen Scott display set-up chair Jill Willett and Barb Kelley - raffle chairs, Timm Johnson assisting Jill Willett and Barb Kelley tree tags John and Ramona Cota - consignment sales Ann Hultgren, vendor chair, consignment sales Dan Balsley, Vince Owyoung, Paul Holtzen - beginner workshop, etc. Clarence Smith photographer, etc. Paul Holtzen - keeper and deliverer of back-drops, etc. Mark Mendenhall - back up photographer, etc. Tina Yates for the backdrop to cover the pegboard in the North Wing. Set Up Crew, Floor Monitors, Front Gate, Raffle Ticket Sales, Kitchen: Vince and Kathy Owyoung Howard and Pam Gallego Doug Hamby, Patti Fletcher Gary and Lucy Judd Mike and Linda McCurdy Dan and Marie Balsley Phong Nguyen Roger Steel Bill Burns Wayne Blunk Simon Lau Mario Rendina Kathleen O Donnell Bob Michael

Bob Bugay Clarence Smith Alex Boyle Sylvia Anderson Steve Egan Kitty Gerwig Chris Hartung All those who stayed to take down the show another huge job! Also, thanks for all the terrific raffle donations. The silent auction items donated by Ken Santucci and Vince Owyoung added significantly to the raffle success. The raffle netted the club $1854.00! Patti Fletcher will give the full financial report at the April meeting. Beginner Workshop Sunday Raffle Prizes Vendor Area Sunday s Demo, Peter tea

And the lucky winners of the demo trees were Dan on Saturday and Jill on Sunday. Club News and Announcements: SGAC Spring Sale March 19 & 20 Our Club participated in the Shepard Garden Center Spring Sale this year. This sale helps fund operation of the Garden Center for all of us to enjoy. Thank you to all that helped out. 2016 Home Tour Save the Date Saturday May 28 Board Member Steve Egan has once again put together an impressive home tour for us to enjoy. This year we will tour collections by Renee Seely, John & Ramona Cota, Doc Ward and Bob Bugay & Paula Maxwell. This promises to be an outstanding day of bonsai and fun. More details will be coming soon. Meeting Refreshments Please consider bringing in refreshments for one or more of our upcoming meetings. I think we all enjoy these snacks during the meeting but they don t happen by themselves. The Club provides funds for the items, we just need volunteers to do it. Sign up sheets will be circulated at the next meeting.

Officer Nominations Its time to start thinking about next year s club officers. Dino has volunteered to be our Chairman and will bring a slate of nominees to our May Meeting. If you would like to serve on the Board in any capacity see Dino please.
