Demographics Pew Research Center (2014) estimates that there are between 200,000 and 225,000 undocumented immigrants enrolled in college. 49% of undocumented students will drop out of high school (as opposed to only 11% of native born students) Only 7,000-13,000 Undocumented students enrolled in college throughout the United States Goldendoor Scholars, 2012

Most college-bound undocumented students... Are fluent in the English language Attended elementary, middle, and high school in the United States Have excelled academically in high school and want to pursue a college education Currently lack a way to become legal residents or citizens in the United States Educators for Fair Consideration Fact Sheet An Overview of College-Bound Undocumented Students

Why does this matter? Many administrators are unfamiliar with the challenges faced by undocumented students Undocumented students are marginalized and often neglected in the persistence/retention discussion Colleges should develop workshops to educate administrators, faculty, and counselors about undocumented students and the educational challenges they face and provide concrete procedures on how to better serve undocumented students William Pérez, 2010. Higher education access for undocumented students: Recommendations for counseling professional. Journal of College Admission, 206, 32 35.

Challenges Faced Higher levels of anxiety than population at large Unique financial concerns Fear of deportation Sense of isolation Challenges maneuvering the college admissions process Lack of resources specifically targeting this population on college campuses The UndocuScholars Project In the Shadows of the Ivory Tower: Undocumented Undergraduates and the Liminal State of Immigration Reform

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Executive Order implemented by President Barack Obama Protects eligible candidates from deportation while giving them legal presence for two years Renewable Determined on a case-by-case basis under the guidelines set by the Secretary of Homeland Security United States Citizenship and Immigration Services www.uscis.gov

Development, Relief, & Education for Minors Act (DREAM Act) Act will make it possible for undocumented students brought to the United States as minors to earn their U.S. citizenship. The bill was first introduced in the Senate on August 1, 2001, Senators Dick Durbin and Orrin Hatch and has since been reintroduced several times but has failed to pass.

Supreme Court Ruling January 2016 - Deadlock Due to a federal court order, US Citizenship and Immigrant Services will not begin accepting requests for the expansion of DACA on February 18 as originally planned. The court's temporary injunction, issued February 16, does not affect the existing DACA. Individuals may continue to come forward and request an initial grant of DACA or renewal of DACA under the guidelines established in 2012

What can I do to support undocumented students? Use inclusive language and avoid ıllegal, unauthorızed, or alıen Seek information about the undocumented population in your state Know your institution s position on undocumented students Identify allies to support degree persistence and graduation Create an information sheet about general student services which also includes information pertaining to undocumented students Create an environment that is a safe place for undocumented students Abide by FERPA CANNOT disclose a student's undocumented status
