The Monroe Administration I. James Monroe s presidency marked the era of good feeling in the USA A. Economically successful, no world conflicts, no major problems II. However two regions within USA were beginning to divide over social and economic differences A. North vs. South/ Free vs. Slave / Industry vs. Agriculture III. Much of Monroe s presidency was spent trying to reconnect the dividing USA and prevent a possible Civil War A. American System / Missouri Compromise

The Growing West I. After the Revolutionary War the USA began moving westward to new lands II. Nine new states joined the USA between 1791 & 1819 A. They had been admitted alternately free and slave B. This maintained a sectional balance in Congress C. Reasons for Westward Expansion I. US army defeated many Native American tribes clearing the way for new settlements II. Improved transportation methods westward A. Cumberland Road à connected Baltimore to St. Louis (east to west) B. Invention of the steamboat in 1811 made water travel easier & faster C. Canals (Eire) allowed for increased trade between west and east III. The west offered Americans opportunity to own land and start a new life

The Missouri Compromise I. Henry Clay negotiated a compromise to prevent conflict II. The Missouri Compromise: A. Missouri was admitted as a slave state B. Maine was admitted as a free state i. Kept the sectional balance between slave & free states C. Slavery was prohibited north of 36º 30' latitude line, that was the southern border of Missouri III. Foreign Policy Treaty of 1818 I. Signed between the USA and Great Britain II. Fixed the American-Canadian border at the 49th Parallel III. Both nations would jointly own the Oregon Territory for 10 years IV. Ended hostilities between USA & G.B.

Foreign Policy Adams-Onis Treaty (1819) I. Spain did not police Florida and it became a safe place for criminals & hostile Native Americans A. These groups attacked the USA and retreat into Florida where Spanish government did nothing B. USA wants to control Florida to stop these problems II. Spain and USA agree to the Adams-Onis Treaty A. Spain ceded (gives) the USA Florida B. USA pays Spain 5 million dollars for Florida
