GADSDEN CITY BOARD OF EDUCATION REGULAR MEETING TUESDAY, JANUARY 12, 2016 RECOGNITION OF GUESTS/AWARDS Mrs. Kelly Cochran called the meeting to order and opened the meeting with prayer. She thanked Titan Ambassadors Ashley James and Savannah Day, who assisted at the meeting. Mrs. Kristen Woods, Principal of Walnut Park welcomed everyone to the meeting and thanked the Board Members for all they do. She introduced Eilljah Taylor and Jai Patel, Beta Club students of Walnut Park who led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag and recited a poem in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. REPORTS Board Member Appreciation Month: Mrs. Rhonda Perry announced that January was Board Member Appreciation Month and gift baskets were presented to the Board Members by Mrs. Sharon Maness and Mrs. Deidra Holland. Mr. Carl Byers, Director of Valley Street Campus, Gadsden State Community College: Mr. Carl Byers, Director of the Valley Street Campus of Gadsden State Community College spoke to the audience concerning the programs available at the Valley Street Campus. The Valley Street Campus of Gadsden State was established on July 6, 1960 as the Gadsden Vocational Trade School. Mr. Eugene Prater, Director of Veterans General Continuation Program for Negroes, founded the training school to give Black American veterans an opportunity for higher learning in Etowah County. The programs offered today at the Valley Street Campus are marketing management, air conditioning, carpentry, practical nursing, phlebotomy and nursing assistant. INFORMATION ITEMS Gadsden City Schools received two grants Dependent Care Development Grant for Eura Brown Elementary in the amount of $10,800 and the Program Improvement Grant (Career Readiness Indicators) in the amount of $5,791.00. The Gadsden City Schools Spelling Bee is scheduled for January 13, 2016, at 9:00 A.M. at the Gadsden City Board of Education. The Etowah County Spelling Bee will be held at Gadsden City High School Auditorium on February 10, 2016, at 9:00 A.M.
President, Kelly Cochran commented on the new billboard featuring the Merit Scholar semi-finalists from Gadsden City High School. Superintendent Miller announced that this year will be the ten year celebration for Gadsden City High School and that more information will be forthcoming in the next few months. Mr. Mike Haney complimented Mrs. Kristen Woods on the appearance of Walnut Park Elementary and noted that it shows pride in the school. The next Board Meeting will be held on February 9, 2016 at 5:00 P.M. at Striplin Elementary.
