Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region 2013 By Sophie Lu LUP 011.8-3, Dec. 2013 Guangxi is the country s only area in the west which has a coastline and seaports. This region has the geographic advantage of close relations with the ASEAN countries, and the central government has placed emphasis on the importance of this province in Sino-ASEAN cooperation. In 2012, metal, power and building materials became the industries with an output of over 100 billion yuan, which is a corner stone of Guangxi s industrial development. The revenue of the tourism industry also reached 100 billion, one year earlier than planned. Guangxi produced 62.1% of total machine-made sugar in China. The growth of imports and exports are approximately 20% higher than the national average, mainly attributed to the ASEAN China Free Trade Area. Area 236,700 square kilometers 69.7% are mountainous areas Natural Resources Rich in non-ferrous metal resources, is one of the 10 key areas in China 12 kinds of metal deposits are the largest in the country. Population It s been formally known as Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region since 1958; with 38% of the population in this area are ethnic minorities. Key Industries Food processing, auto manufacturing, petrochemicals, power generation, nonferrous metal, metallurgy and machinery are the seven key industries. The trade volume between the ASEAN countries and Guangxi province was USD 12.049 billion, up 26.0% year on year, accounting for over 40% of the total trade in Guangxi. CPI 3.2%, higher than the national average of 2.6% Beibu Gulf Economic Zone (BGEZ) The BGEZ created 1/3 of Guangxi s GDP and 1/2 of foreign trade with only 1/5 of land and 1/4 of population in 2012. The GDP of the BGEZ reached 431.636 billion yuan in 2012, over 1/3 of Guangxi s total GDP, with an annual increase of 19.1% Page 5 of 6
since 2007. Total imports and exports were 14.9 billion US dollars, over 50% of Guangxi s total, and it was 2.6 times of that in 2007. Beibuwan port is Guangxi s main port. In 2012, the annual goods throughput was around 174 million tons, with 824 thousand TEU, a large increase than that of five years ago. BGEZ is located in the conjuncture of South China Economic Circle, Southwest China Economic Circle and ASEAN Economic Circle. BGEZ consists of four cities, namely Nanning, Beihai, Qinzhou and Fangchenggang, as well as the transport and logistics of Congzuo city and Fangchenggang city. It covers a landmass of 42,500 square kilometers, around 18% of Guangxi. It has a population of 13 million, around a quarter of that in Guangxi. The Development Scheme of BGEZ will span from 2006 to 2020. BGEZ is expected to develop into a China-ASEAN logistics base, trade base, processing and manufacturing base and information exchange center, which serves as a strategic highland to facilitate and support Western Development and a key international regional business cooperation zone, featured by high opening up level, strong influence, economic prosperity, social harmony and sound eco-environment.
