The G.I bill - Designed to ease veterans back into jobs and reward the veterans money for their service. - Made veterans a main priority for job holders and job training was payed for if needed - Gov. Would pay up to 4 years of education - Also, the government provided low interest loans for those veterans starting businesses and buying houses and as a result a boost in economy - By 1950, 10 million veterans utilized the benefits of the GI Bill and pursued education at their respective universities

Economic boom Economic Boom - Tax cut of 6 billion by Truman in 1945 spurred investment in new factories and better equipment - Wartime savings and demand for goods helped postwar economic growth. -The pursuit of an "all electric Kitchen increased and appliances were created. -Brenton Woods Agreement used to oversee international trade and finance and the International Monetary Fund Council of Economic Advisors: conferred with the president and formulated policies for maintaining employment, production, and purchasing power -price controls: Office of Price Administration sought to control inflation and pressure on prices

Truman Domestic program Employment Act of 1946 that established the Council of Economic Advisers to confer with the president and create policies for maintaining employment, production, and purchasing power. Congressional eagerness to dismantle wartime control worsened inflation in the US, so the Office of Price administration came about. Multiple Bills were imposed on price controls and therefore opposition came about. America uneasy post World War II. Their attitude was focused more on quality of life than anything else

Eightieth of congress - Republicans won congress in 1946 and seized the opportunity to reverse the New Deal - Taft Hartley Act was passed: employees had to join the union, outlawed secondary boycotts/strikes against suppliers of businesses and forced employees to sign anti communist loyalty oaths Republican Control of congress and the relationship between Truman and Congress was antagonistic Twenty-Second Amendment en acted in (1951) limited president to a maximum of two full terms in office

The Politics of Civil Rights Truman challenged racial discrimination used executive powers to establish The Committee on Civil Rights in 1946 ordered to end racial discrimination in departments of federal government and all three branches of the armed forces urged Congress to pass the Fair Employment Practices Commission that would prevent employers from discriminating against hiring African Americans

The Fair Deal -Truman proposed a domestic agenda that included civil rights, national health care legislation, federal aid to education -based on belief in continual economic growth -Eighty-first Congress rejected many new Fair Deal measures -Congress enacted: raised minimum wage, increased social security benefits and coverage, expanded appropriations for public power -Congress rejected federal aid to education, national health insurance, civil-rights legislation, larger farm subsidies, repeal of Taft-Hartley Act

The Anticommunist Crusade fear of disloyalty and communist influence- anticommunist hysteria FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover: claimed colleges were centers of red propaganda Truman s Office of Education introduced Zeal for Democracy campaign: provided local school boards with curriculum to combat communist subversion House Un-American Activities Committee: began hearings to expose communist influence Hollywood Ten: a group of prominent film directors and screenwriters who refused to say whether they had been members of the Communist party; were convicted of contempt and sent to prison

Loyalty and Security Executive Order 9835: established the Federal Employee Loyalty Program to root out subversives in the government -raid of Amerasia offices revealed that classified documents had been given by State Department employees -Federal Employee Loyalty Program: barred members of the Communist party and anyone guilty of sympathetic association with it Joseph McCarthy- claimed he had a list of 205 names government officials who were communists; use stream of unsupported accusations to discredit Truman administration thousands lost jobs, were fired or denied jobs on security grounds
