United States Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service Circular Series FOP - November Cotton: World Markets and Trade Peru Cotton Production, Consumption and Imports Lb. Bales Production Cotton Imports Consumption Cotton Imports from the U.S. / / / / / / / Peru started importing small amounts of cotton in the early s and by / imports became the rule rather than the exception. In / imports accounted for nearly percent of domestic consumption as Peru s textile industry expanded. In /, imports accounted for percent of domestic consumption. Usually percent of Peru s cotton imports come from the United States. U.S cotton exports to Peru in / totaled thousand bales, up slightly from the year prior. Since /, U.S. cotton exports to Peru have increased percent. The Pima crop, grown in Northern Peru, is subject to variations in water availability that dictates whether rice or an alternative crop is grown. The supply of Peruvian Pima is limited and insufficient to meet the demands of the domestic spinning mills. According the Peru Ministry of Agriculture, farmers in the Piura area that grow most of the ELS output have reported planting only, hectares during the normal planting period, down from the, hectares planted last year. Thus the / Peru Pima production appears set to fall slightly from last season. Use of cotton in Peru has gradually expanded over the past years. In the s cotton use in Peru averaged thousand bales per year. In the s, the use expanded to thousand bales and USDA projects use in / to be thousand bales. Textiles have become one of Peru s top exports. The Peruvian industry s export strategy is to position its products in the higher end market. They are aware Approved by the World Agricultural Outlook Board/USDA

that it would be difficult to compete against China in the low price sector so they have turned to high value products. Cotton production in the s averaged thousand bales, but dropped to an average of thousand in the s. Since /, production has dropped to an average of thousand bales, which reflects the low output in / to /. USDA s forecast for the / crop is thousand bales. The decrease in production, compared to the s and s, is caused by a dramatic drop in area harvested since /. In the last six years, area harvested has averaged thousand hectares, compared to an average of thousand hectares harvested in the s and thousand harvested in the s. November
