BOLT

Introduction - First paragraph BOLT Background provide background/historical context to the topic Opposing view present differing perspectives on this issue List of evidence how will you structure your essay Thesis last sentence

Find BOLT in the following introduction paragraph The Great Depression caused many of the major powers to look inward to solve their own domestic problems. This allowed for countries, such as Germany and Italy, to adopt a more aggressive foreign policy, which the major powers were both unwilling and unable to halt. While some have argued that Hitler is solely to blame for instigating a second world war, the reality is not as simple. When taking into consideration other factors, particularly the western and Soviet reactions to this aggressive foreign policy, defining the reasons for becomes more difficult. Therefore, even though Hitler s foreign policy is the most prominent reason, it is one piece of a multi- layer of causes, including appeasement and Soviet foreign policy, that led to the unintended consequence of WW2.

Find the Thesis, restate the points and the larger issues In conclusion, the consequences, to a medium extent, of Hitler s aggressive foreign policy, along with other factors, such as the policy of appeasement and Soviet foreign policy, were the main reasons for WW2. The combination of Hitler s aggressive actions in Czechoslovakia and Poland were both a reponse to the lack of a firm stand made by Britain, as outlined in their policy of achievement. As well, the unwillingness of the Western powers to form an anti- German alliance with Stalin gave Hitler the opportunity to form an offensive pact with the Soviet Union that would guarantee the patrician of Poland, which, consequently, turned out to be the spark of WW2. Overall, it was these actions within the interwar years that lead to the deadliest war in History, ultimately destroyed 2 empires and lead to a new world order after the war with 2 superpowers and a ideologically divided Europe that would last until the end of the 20 th century.

Was the Treaty of Versailles a fair treaty? Organizing your paragraphs Sentence 1 topic sentence Sentence 2 define key terms Sentence 3 Point 1 Sentence 4 Evidence Sentence 5 Analysis Sentence 6 Transition Sentence 7 Point 2 Sentence 8 Evidence Sentence 9 Analysis Sentence 10 concluding sentence The treaty of Versailles was not a fair treaty for Germany. The Treaty of Versailles was the peace treaty signed by the Big 3 after WW1. First, Germany had to take sole responsibility for the war with clause 231 For example, as Keynes says, it is not possible to lay the entire responsibility for the war on a single nation. This shows that, even at the time of the Treaty, leaders knew that the treaty was not fair to Germany. The Treaty itself was unfair, but also how the negotiations took place. The Germans considered the negotiations a diktat, meaning a dictated peace, where they were simply handed the treaty and were not allowed to participated in the negotiations. For example, as a German cartoon from 1919 depicts the Big 3 holding the rope for the guillotine, while a man with his hands tied behind his back, representing Germany, is being led to his death. This shows that the German people felt that they were going to be destroyed by this treaty and, since they were not allowed to participate in the negotiations, had no choice but to accept the terms. Therefore, because of the terms of the treaty and the diktat, the Treaty of Versailles was not a fair treaty for Germany.

The policy of appeasement, as outlined within the Munich Agreement, allowed for Hitler to continue his aggressive foreign policy, without fear of reprisals which ultimately helped lead tp the beginning of WW2. The policy of appeasement was adopted by the British PM Neville Chamberlain that called for a reworking of the Treaty of Versailles with Germany. The Munich Agreement is held up as the most obvious example of appeasement, however Britain had no other options. For example, the Munich Agreement gave Hitler the Sudetenland in return for a piece of paper guaranteeing peace. At first glance, this policy appears extremely weak and it left Hitler s expansionist foreign policy unchecked, but if you look at the size of the British army in 1939, which was one- twentieth the size of Germany s, it becomes quite clear that Britain had no other option since they couldn t stop Hitler, even if they wished. The consequences of this policy of appeasement however, clearly led the way to war. At this point, Hitler did not believe that Britain had the will to militarily stop him, despite their constant warnings regarding Poland. For example, despite the Anglo- Polish defense agreement, Hitler still invaded Poland on September 1, 1939, with the British responding 2 days later with their own declaration. Hitler s shock from this unintended consequence of war is apparent by his response of, What now?...implying his foreign minister had misled him about Britain s probable reaction. This clearly shows that Hitler did not believe that Britain had the will to stop him and that he believed he could continue his expansion with little consequences. Therefore, although appeasement allowed Hitler to continue his aggressive foreign policy, it is clear that his intention all along was to expand.
