MAX S CORNER City Manager Max Royle, discusses building height part-2 Information from the St. Augustine Beach City Manager, Max Royle, about various matters. In last month s essay, I provided information about the 35-foot building height limit that was put in the city s charter by an overwhelming majority of the residents who voted in the 2014 general election. Information was also featured about certain state regulations that mandate the location of the first habitable floor of buildings in flood zones along the coast and how from that point a building s height is measured. This month, I want to respond to some of the allegations that folks have put on the public record concerning the issue of how building height in the city is determined allegations that have needlessly made some residents fearful that our little corner of the Florida paradise will become the antithesis of that paradise: a monster-tower, coastal south Florida look-alike. A Message from Mayor Samuels On December 31, 2015 I will be formally ending my second term as the Mayor of St. Augustine Beach. It has been a true honor to have held the position as your Mayor. It has been a double honor to be the first woman to hold the Mayoral position for the City of St. Augustine Beach. Thank you for your trust. The Commission will be choosing a New Mayor and Vice Mayor in the December meeting. It is with this in mind that I would like to review the year and our accomplishments for the City. First and foremost the Commission has been able to maintain the property millage rate at 2.3992 mils. This rate has held steadily for the past three fiscal years. Our assessed property values have increased. This is good news as it is an indicator that the housing market has recovered from the recession. Click on the link to read this article in its entirety: http://www.staugbch.com/documents/newsletter/15/as12.pdf To Protect and Serve from our Police Department The St. Augustine Beach Police Department is proud to announce a partnership with CVS Pharmacy with the recent installation of a Med Return Drug Collection Unit. The collection unit is made available for the public to dispose of unwanted and expired prescription drugs. The drugs can be disposed of without question into the secure box and then the agency will destroy them in accordance with Florida State Statutes. The unit is mounted inside the Police Department located at 2300 A1A South, St. Augustine Beach. The unit will be accessible to the public for drop offs Monday thru Friday from 8 A.M. until 5 P.M. The unit was given to the St. Augustine Beach Police Department through a grant with CVS Caremark Community Relations Department. CVS Drug Disposal for Safer Communities Program was created because they recognized the importance of safely removing expired and unwanted prescription drugs from households where they can otherwise become a source for drug abuse or diversion. It is our sincere hope of the St. Augustine Beach Police Department that this drug collection unit becomes a useful tool for your agency in the fight against prescription drug abuse in your community. 3
