AEC 2012: Once again the Austrian Economics Center (AEC) went through an equally fascinating and successful year. In 2012 we were able to reach out to an even bigger audience and take further steps to promote free market solutions to a broader public. The institute is steadily growing, our team is getting bigger, since additional activities fill our agenda. Director Barbara Kolm is demanded in several functions - as a discussion leader, interviewpartner, speaker and lecturer, not only in Austria, but especially in south-east Europe and as well from South Korea to the United States of America. We are proud of welcoming international top academics and opinion leaders, e.g. Mario Vargas Llosa and Niall Ferguson, José Pinera and Thilo Sarazzin at our events and knowing them as fellow-campaigners and supporters for our ideas and our vision. This report is dedicated to those, who generously support the AEC and help spreading the messages of liberty and Austrian Economics - Thank You! Photographer: AEC Britt Schier Page -- 1 --

Mission Statement: The Austrian Economics Center (AEC) is a politically independent research institute invested in spreading the values of a free and responsible society based on the ideals of the Austrian School of Economics. The AEC continues this tradition by hosting monthly lectures and discussion groups where those who believe in free minds and free markets can meet other like-minded people. We promote the ideas of the Austrian School of Economics as a viable economic alternative in Austria and elsewhere not only by the means of a public think tank, but also as an academic institution. Through open round table discussions and occasional lectures by economists, philosophers, and business leaders, the AEC provides a valuable resource for intellectual nourishment, networking, and the sharing of public policy ideas among people who might otherwise feel quite alone in a big-government society. In 2011 the Friends of Austrian Economics Center was also organized as a 501(c)3 tax-deductible organization based out of Indianapolis, Indiana. The Austrian Economics Center is legally listed as a scientific organization as well and therefore, any donations to the AEC are tax-deductible. Page -- 2 --

Free Market Road Show: Free Market Road Show: We divided the Free Market Road Show into two laps this year as we did last year. Overall results and impact of this year s Free Market Road Show were very positive. We managed to stick within our tight budget. Consequently, the results are, with this little budget, excellent! We were also able to partner up with Liberty Fund in a more substantial way this year. The Free Market Road Show 2012 developed much further and has spread the message of liberty to thousands of people throughout Europe and the Caspian region. The topic of the conference 2012 was: Europe at a Turning Point: Europe on the Road to Serfdom? Twelve conferences in different places across Europe were held between April and May 2012. For the first time the Free Market Road Show took place in Ankara (Turkey), Thessaloniki (Greece) and Tirana (Albania). Unforgettable was first of all our conference in Thessaloniki. At the University of Macedonia we welcomed more than 400 guests. Out of the three new cities, especially Thessaloniki which was sponsored by Global Philanthropic Trust, all were extremely successful because we a) could rely on the local partners and knew them well (Ankara), b) took the right choice with the group in Thessaloniki. Tirana was an experiment but was worth it, given, that the organizer had just moved into politics it was a start in Albania. In order to find solutions to the challenges that lay ahead the Free Market Road Show 2012 brought together international speakers in a panel format that encourages discussion. The speakers have been specialising in economic, political and scientific fields, supporting the spirit oft he Austrian School of Economics and called for the implementation in current economic policy. From the host s point of view the Free Market Road Show 2012 was an extraordinary success that upgraded our network across Europe. In 2013 the Austrian Economics Center in cooperation with the European Center for Economic Growth (ECEG) and other free-market institutions will have it largest FMRS to date, with conferences in 24 different countries (26 cities). Tax Freedom Day How many months and days a year Austrians had to work until they have paid their taxes? The Tax Fredom day gives the answer: In 2012 the Tax Freedom Day took place on July 29th. That means, Austrians had to work almost seven months of the year before they have earned enough to pay their taxes! Our calculation is based on a 365 day calendar and not actual work weeks. The tax burden isn t just income tax and national insurance, it includes VAT, capital gains tax, corporate income tax, cigarette duties, fuel duties, car tax and many other taxes. The official Tax Freedom Day also doesn t count the federal deficit, even though deficits must eventually be financed. : Graphic 1: Tax Freedom Day (Austrian Economics Center) Graphic 2: Tax Freedom Day GDP (Austrian Economics Cent- From 1976 until 2012 the Tax Freedom Day has moved from June 28 th to July 29 th. Next Generation We need to prepare the ground for the next generation today. First, because we like to create a free and so called open minded society. That s the main reason, why we value education very much. Next Generation supports future entrepreneurs and establishes an interest in economic themes among young people. We provide economic information and enlarge network opportunities. The Austrian Economics Center likes to assist in bringing up open minded, critical and responsible youths. For all of these reasons the AEC is organising a student s competition in cooperation with the Friedrich A. Hayek Institut and different local sponsors. In the centre of our attention are the principles of the free market economy and of entrepreneur-ships. The topic of 2012s competition was mobility for the next generation. The contest was introduced to all in all more than 600 different schools with various teaching concepts. The contest requirements asked students to submit ideas on how to communicate new and innovative approaches to improving the personal and social mobility of people around the world. Submissions were accepted in any medium (audio, video or text), and the final submissions included pod casts and videos. A dedicated jury of well-known experts have chosen the winners of the contest. The prices were handed over at our Charity Gala 2012. Page -- 5 --

Charity-Gala: For the last three years, the Austrian Economics Center (AEC), in collaboration with the Friedrich A. von Hayek Institut and other local sponsors, has organized an annual contest for Austrian students to focus attention on specific themes related to the principles of free enterprise and entrepreneurship. The contest winners are selected by a distinguished panel of judges and then recognized at a Gala event held in Vienna. This annual event is also an opportunity to recognize the academic and/or professional contributions of a prominent defender of liberty from around the world by honouring them with the Hayek Institut s Hayek Lifetime Achievement Award and honorary membership in the Hayek Society. Professor Ferguson, the winner oft he Hayek Liftime Award 2012 also addressed the young winners of the Mobility for the Next Generation contest, urging them to immerse themselves in right ideas and to continually seek intellectual inspiration because only if we feel we have the intellectual inspiration can we hope to win the battle for liberty Niall Ferguson und Meinhard Platzer (LGT) Foto: AEC Christopher Ohmeyer Page -- 6 --

The Hayek Lifetime Achievement Award The Hayek Liftime Achievement Award A total of 240 guests listened to Niall Ferguson s keynote, among them executives of multinational companies, politicans, entrepreneurs and as our most welcomed defenders of liberty Chris Talley and Emilio Pacheco, President and Vice President of Liberty Fund and Terry Kibbe, representing Global Philanthrophic Trust Niall Ferguson, famous British historian and fighter for liberty was honoured at the Charity Gala Mobility for the Next Generation. Alvino Mario Fantini, Secretary General of the Friedrich A. v.
