The following list of assignments will be completed in your HISTORY NOTEBOOK. Consider them a handbook for understanding the U.S. Constitution!!! You will be graded on the following: All required elements are included and completed. (Follow the directions on each page EXACTLY!!!) The written descriptions must be clear and understandable. (Keep it short and sweet.) Drawings, illustrations, and diagrams must be clear and understandable. Everything is arranged and laid out in a neat and organized manner. Finishing touches such as coloring, shading, or decoration must be included. Your handbook will be considered incomplete without them. (DECORATE! DECORATE! DECORATE! )

Page 1- The Preamble to the U.S. CONSTITUTION Use pages p.102, and pgs. 128-129 in your America textbook to create a Title Page for your handbook. The Title Page must include the entire PREAMBLE to the U.S. Constitution as well as a decorative border and lettering. Finishing touches such as coloring, shading, or decoration must be included. Somewhere on your Title Page draw and label a diagram that explains the major goals of the preamble (p.128) (TITLE PAGE)

Legislative Branch: The United States Congress Use Pages 132-122 in your America textbook as a resource to create the following. (USE TWO PAGES, pages 4 & 5 OF HANDBOOK) Write a short explanation of the major role (or job) of the legislative branch. Draw a diagram of the U.S. Congress. Show that it is a bicameral institution by including and labeling the Senate and the House of Representatives. Create a box that lists the requirements to be a member of the U.S. Senate and their term of office. Create a box that lists the requirements to be a member of the U.S. House of Representatives and their term of office. Include an explanation (written or some type of drawing) somewhere in this section that the number of representatives from each state in the House of Representatives is based on population and the number of Senators in the Senate is set at two from each state. Draw and label a diagram that shows the steps of how a bill becomes a law. Use the steps below: 1. A member of the House of Representatives introduces a bill to Congress. 2. The bill goes to a committee for study. 3. The committee sends it to the floor of the House of Representatives for debate (discussion) and a vote. 4. After it passes in the House of Representatives, it is sent to the Senate. The bill repeats steps #2 and #3 in the Senate. 5. The bill is sent to the President for approval. If the President signs the bill, it becomes a law. If the President vetoes (rejects) the bill, it is sent back to Congress. 6. Congress can vote to override (ignore) the President s veto. If 2/3 of the total votes to override, then the bill will pass and becomes a law. Write a short explanation of some of the other roles of Congress.

The Executive Branch: The Office of the President of the United States (USE TWO PAGES, pages 6 & 7 OF HANDBOOK)) Use pages 134-135 in your America history textbook as a resource for the following: Write a short explanation of the major role (or job) of the executive branch. Create a box that lists the requirements to be President of the United States of America and their term of office. (You will need to read Article II, Section 1, Clause 5 of the Constitution. Page T109.) Recreate the graphic organizer on page T134 that shows the powers of the President. Copy the labels of the graphic organizer, but you must create new symbols for each power. OR, you may choose to completely redesign this graphic organizer to show the powers of the President. Draw an illustration or graphic organizer that shows that there are many members in the Executive Branch that assist the President in his/her role. Include the President, Vice President, Cabinet, and many other advisory boards. Create a map or diagram that explains The Electoral College process.

The Judicial Branch: The Federal Courts (USE TWO PAGES, pages 8 & 9 OF HANDBOOK) Use pages 136-137 in your America history textbook as a resource for the following: Write a short explanation of the major role (or job) of the lower courts of the judicial branch. Draw a symbol of this level of court next to the explanation. Write a short explanation of the major role (or job) of the appellate courts of the judicial branch. Draw a symbol of this level of court next to the explanation. Write a short explanation of the major role (or job) of the Supreme Court of the judicial branch. Draw a symbol of this level of court next to the explanation. Create a flow chart that shows the path of appeal for a case. Write a definition (in your own words) for judicial review. Create an illustration that helps explain your definition. Create a box of at least three quick facts of the Supreme Court. Create another box that tells how justices are appointed to the Supreme Court and their term of office.

Checks and Balances in the U.S. Government (USE ONE PAGE, pages 10 OF HANDBOOK) Write a short explanation of the role of checks and balances in our federal government. Write a definition of a check. Give it a color code. Write a definition of a balance. Give it a different color code. Create a diagram that shows an example of at least one check and one balance for each branch of government. Use the color codes from your definitions in this diagram.

The Bill of Rights These first 10 amendments (changes or additions) to the U.S. Constitution list the freedoms guaranteed to the citizens of the United States.

Use pgs. 114-116 and 140-141 as a resource to create the following on TWO PAGES pages. (USE TWO PAGES, pages 11 & 12 OF HANDBOOK) 1 st Amendment: List our five First Amendment rights. Create at least one illustration to help explain one or more of these rights. 2 nd Amendment: What is the exact meaning of this amendment? Write a short explanation about the different interpretations of this amendment. Draw two images to show the differences between each interpretation. 3 rd Amendment: Write one sentence and create one image to show the meaning of this amendment. 4 6 th + 8 th Amendments: Create a table, flow chart, or other diagram to list the legal rights and protections given to citizens during a criminal proceeding.
