THE RICHARD MILLER COLLECTION 7 Manuscript Boxes Processed: June 1971 Accession Number: 448 By: MR The papers of Richard Miller were deposited in the Archives of Labor History and Urban Affairs in March of 1970. Richard Lester Miller was born on August 12, 1931, in Flint, Michigan. He graduated from Buchanan High School, Buchanan, Michigan, in 1949. Miller received his B.A. in 1957 from Michigan State University, with a major in the social sciences division. In 1961, he received his M.A. (major - political science, minor - statistics), also from Michigan State University. During the period 1958-1959, Miller served as Secretary to the Attorney General of Michigan, Paul L. Adams. He did campaign work in the 1958 election, and his duties also included work in the Criminal Division of the Attorney General's Office. From 1959 to 1960, Miller was an Administrative Assistant to the late Joseph J. Kowalski, Democratic Floor Leader, Michigan House of Representatives. His duties in this capacity included administration of the House Democratic Office - its staff, research, and public relations. The public relations aspect of his position included giving public statements and press releases and speech writing. Beginning in 1961, Miller worked in the Executive Office of the State of Michigan, serving as a Legislative Assistant to former Governor John B. Swainson. The Richard Miller Collection covers the period from 1956 to 1965. It includes correspondence, press releases, memoranda, and clippings. It also contains campaign schedules and lists of campaign workers for the Attorney General's 1958 campaign. Series II: House Democratic Office The inclusive dates of this series are 1959 to 1963. The material is arranged chronologically by year, and within each year is alphabetical by subject. The material generated by the House Democratic Office and included in this series is: general correspondence, bill sum maries, memoranda, campaign materials, press releases, legislative newsletters, legislative correspondence, and fact sheets. Series III: Executive Office, State of Michigan This series covers the dates from 1957 to 1962. Material is arranged chronologically by year, and alphabetically by subject within each year. Undated items are found at the end of the series. Materials include campaign letters, memoranda, travel vouchers, and legislative reports. Series IV: Democratic State Central Committee The inclusive years of this series are 1957 to. The arrangement is chronological by year, and alphabetical by subject within each year. Undated materials are placed at the end of the series. The material in this series was gene rated by the D.S.C.C. and includes many fact sheets, campaign materials, correspondence, press releases, and memoranda. Series V: Democratic National Committee The dates included in this series are 1963 to. Except for one folder, all of the material in this series is from the year. Arrangement is alphabetical by subject, with the undated items at the end of the series. The bulk of the material in this series includes fact sheets and memoranda generated by the Publicity and Research Divisions of the Democratic National Committee and Democratic Study Groups - to be used as campaign materials.
