1 University of California, San Diego Political Science 120H (2010) European Integration Winter 2010 Prof. W.M. Chandler Tu/Th 11:00-12:20 SSB - 385 Room: PCYNH 122 Off. Hrs: Tu/Th 3:30-4:30 TA: Emily Matthews (eomatthews@ucsd.edu) wchandler@ucsd.edu GENERAL This course provides an understanding of the politics of European integration. The introduction examines the development of the EC/EU and reviews theories of integration. Subsequently, we investigate the functioning of core institutions and central actors in building an ever closer union. In considering the challenges of creating a supranational political regime, analysis will also consider conflict and consensus among member states. Viewed broadly, the course evaluates the degree to which convergence and cohesion have been achieved via economic, social and political integration. EVALUATION You may choose between two options in 120H. Option A consists of examinations only, in which your grade will be calculated on the basis on the mid-term and final examinations. Option B includes both examinations plus a term paper. If you choose B, you will submit a one page proposal, by Tues. February 9, 2010, which must then be approved by the instructor. Option A Option B Mid-Term Exam, 4 Feb. 2010 (40%) (30%) Final Exam, Tues. 18 Mar 2010, 11:30-2:29pm (60%) (50%) Optional paper due Thurs.11 Mar 2010 ------- (20%) A list of research paper topics will be provided for those who decide to take Option B. Please note that plagiarism will not be tolerated. The University of California, San Diego policy requires that suspicious papers will be run through Turn It In and referred to the Dean. Always cite work that is not your own. Direct quotes and paraphrases require full citations. When in doubt, ask the instructor. ********** Students enrolled in 120H have access to: http://webct.ucsd.edu 1
