Goal of the lab class hands-on experience with complex experiments data analysis data interpreta4on scien4fic report wri4ng Every student is supposed to complete 4 experiments within one semester

What kind of experiments do we offer? I. Regular experiments: Ø General Physics (see Physics I-III) Ø Nuclear- and Par4cle Physics Ø Op4cs (Quantum Electronics) Ø Solid State Physics Ø Astrophysics II. Advanced Student Labs (ASLs): Ø Experiments close to research in a research group Ø Sign-up and work as a team of 1 4 students Ø Some ASLs count as two regular experiments

Advanced Student Labs (ASLs) Solid-State Physics Prepare a semiconductor structure in a clean-room using photolithography techiques Op4on: measure the quantum Hall effect on your structure Neutronenstreuung am PSI Par4cle Physics Par4cipate in developing a novel detector using scin4lla4ng fibres study cosmic rays, detect muons,... eth zürich

Astronomy Observe and take pictures of planets, galaxies,... Measure proper4es of back-scasered light Quantum Op4cs Quantum dots as single photon sources Hanbury-Brown-Twiss experiment Atom-Photon interac4on Entangled Photons Mach-Zehnder Interferometer Intersubband Transi4ons eth zürich Advanced Student Labs (ASLs)

Regular experiments in HPP Opening hours (only during semester): Mon Fri, 8am 6pm, except Thu Ø Labs are closed during semester breaks Obligatory lab class day: Mondays Ø Assistants are available on Mondays (personal appointments possible on other days)

Procedures Step I: Sign up for an exeriment Ø Mon 9.30 10.30, HPP H12 Ø Wed 14.45 15.45, HPP H12 Step II: Perform experiment Ø typically within 3 weeks Step III: Return experiment (HPP H12) Ø (electronic) signature "measurement finished" from assistant required Step IV: Write report Ø hand in report to assistant Ø make correc4ons required by assistant Ø (electronic) signature "report handed in" from assistant eth zürich Step V: Hand in report to Profs

Working as a team You can work on selected experiments as a team, but: Ø Measurements are done as a team Ø Each student performs an independent data analysis Ø Each student writes his/her own independent report

Starting an experiment Ø Carefully read the instruc4on manual before you meet the assistant Ø Familiarize yourself with safety ma6ers of the experiment Ø Consult addi4onal literature, if you do not understand everything in the instruc4on manual Ø Meet the teaching assistant before you start to work on the experiment

Lab book Ø Each experiment starts with a lab-book entry of its 4tle (and date...) Ø Use the lab-book to write down notes about the experiment, experimental procedures, es4mates,... Ø collect the assistant's signatures "measurement finished" and "report handed in" in the lab-book

Rules Ø Measurements should be finished within 3 weeks Ø Reports should be handed in not later than 3 weeks aier finishing the experiment Ø ALL reports have to be handed in (to the assistant) before the end of the semester. Ø Incomplete experiments expire at the end of the semester

Getting ECTS credit points (9 pts) Ø four experiments completed within ONE year. a) Report accepted and signed by assistant AND b) Report shown and accepted by VP-head (CG or TI) Ø For 9 ECTS expect to invest up to ~ 9*30 = 270 hours / Sem à i.e. up to 60 hour for ONE experiment Ø Excep4ons : some single experiment may count more [addi4onal work done and agreed beforehand with VP-head]

If problems arise... Ø Try to solve experimental problems first on your own Ø If something is broken and you cannot repair it yourself: contact the assistant Ø In excep4onal cases, the lab technicians will help Ø Any accidents (even the smallest) have to be reported to the Professors
