United States Academy Foundation Issue Paper Revised November 4, 2015 Subject: PRINCIPAL LEVEL DONOR RECOGNITION SOCIETIES Issue: To consider adding two donor recognition societies for cumulative lifetime giving of $5M - $9.9M and $10M+. Background: The current campaign is attracting new levels of giving to the Academy and Foundation. In early requests for campaign support, donors are often encouraged to aspire to new levels of campaign giving that will allow them to reach a threshold in cumulative lifetime giving when their campaign pledges are fulfilled. Thus, the effective use of a giving threshold has been a viable campaign tool for us in early requests. Continued success with the campaign will result in greater numbers of donors whose campaign gift/pledge will exceed $5M+, including a smaller number of donors who will achieve the $10M+ threshold. Ultimately, when campaign pledges are fulfilled, these donors cumulative lifetime giving will exceed $5M+. Current Policy: The highest level of stewardship and recognition for donors is through the Superintendent s Society. The Superintendent s Society recognizes individuals whose lifetime giving equals or exceeds $1M in cash receipts and irrevocable planned gifts. (Pledges and revocable planned gifts do not qualify for inclusion in the Superintendent s Society.) We currently have 9 living donors whose cumulative lifetime giving exceeds $5M, and one of these 9 individuals has cumulative lifetime giving exceeding $10M. Qualifying gifts include: o Cash including matching gifts o Gifts-in-kind o Real estate o Irrevocable planned gifts As of 31 December 2014, The Superintendent s Society consists of: o 1 donor with cumulative lifetime giving of $10M+ o 8 donors with cumulative lifetime giving of $5M-$9.9M
Discussion: o 33 donors with cumulative lifetime giving of $1M-$4.9M The addition of two donor recognition societies, with corresponding benefits, for cumulative lifetime giving of $5M - $9.9M and $10M+, will enable the USNAF to properly honor the extraordinary commitment of these donors. Based on the gift table for the campaign, we are projecting the growth of these levels by the end of the campaign to: Recommendations: o 8 donors with cumulative lifetime giving of $10M+ o 33 donors with cumulative lifetime giving of $5M-$9.9M o 90 donors with cumulative lifetime giving of $1M-$4.9M Maintain existing qualifying gifts policy Establish two donor recognition societies for cumulative lifetime giving of $5M - $9.9M and $10M+ with proposed benefits as outlined below. 2
