Page 2 Scottish Rite News Greetings Brethren, The month of June starts a new Scottish Rite year for our Valley. Congratulations to Bro. Alan Gideonsen and Bro. Robert McNally on being elected as the Thrice Potent Master and Sovereign Prince, respectively, and to Bro. John Mitchell for being elected to the Cathedral Board. Also, congratulations to all of the officers who have moved up or have been appointed in line in all the Bodies. This is the time of year that I also ask for help, particularly to serve on committees. Unfortunately, this year we need more. There are two appointed vacancies in the Peoria Council of Princes of Jerusalem. If you have an interest and desire to get in line, please contact Sovereign Prince Bob McNally. We also are in need of a Fraternal Secretary. This is not a difficult position, but it does require a commitment to the Valley. We have a place for everyone who has a desire to help, but we need you to let us know where your interests lay. We have a number of events planned for members, our ladies and families this year. We start off with an evening with the Peoria Chiefs baseball at Dozer Field on August 18th; August 17th is the Annual Bratfest at the Abbas Grotto; and August 28th is our outdoor degree, just to name a few. All of our events can be found in this and upcoming issue of the Scottish Rite News. For both long-time and new members, these events are great opportunities to renew acquaintances and meet new brothers. Please make every effort to join us, we miss you. Donald F. Edwards, MSA 33 Commander-in-Chief

We have done fundraisers throughout the year to try and cover as much cost as possible. If anyone would like to help support the Chapter in covering the $170 per person that it is costing it would be very much appreciated. We currently have 2 State officers and 1 adult state staff member so Fides is being well represented on the State level. Our next Fundraiser will be July 26th at the Morton Pizza Ranch From 5-8pm, with a portion of the proceeds as well as any tips received go to the Chapter. Thank you for helping support our local DeMolay!
Scottish Rite News Page 7 2017 May-June FOUNDATION NEWS The Peoria Scottish Rite was first established in Yates City, Illinois on February 25, 1867. The Scottish Rite moved to Peoria in 1869, and met in three locations before constructing our beautiful Cathedral. The cornerstone of our Cathedral was laid on May 7th, 1924, and our Cathedral has been our home for over 90 years. The question now is: how many more years will we survive in this cathedral and as a Scottish Rite Valley? The Foundation was established to help preserve our beautiful Cathedral for many generations of new Scottish Rite members. However, our current financial problems are not caused by a lack of support from the Foundation. The real cause is a lack of support from our members in replenishing themselves by bringing in new members to at least replace themselves, or to grow by inviting friends and neighbors to become members of our Masonic Fraternity and the Valley of Peoria. We thank those who have worked diligently to maintain our membership, and ask those who have not to please join the cause of preserving our Scottish Rite Valley by talking to your friends about the value of membership in the Masonic Fraternity and our Scottish Rite Valley. Also, many thanks to all who have made donations, small, large, any size, to our Foundation to preserve our beautiful Cathedral. Have you considered what your legacy gift to the Scottish Rite Valley of Peoria Foundation might be? Naming the foundation as a beneficiary of an annuity, I.R.A., or an insurance policy is one way to greatly impact our Valley s future in a positive manner. This, plus telling your friends and neighbors about the Masonic Fraternity and the wonderful life changing experiences they could have as members. Be sure to have a petition handy when you do this! Your legacy gift could make a difference in helping our Valley help the next generation of members to experience the beauty of our cathedral. Please consider the possibilities. Thank you for considering making a gift to Valley of Peoria Freemasons Foundation, and a gift to the preservation of our fraternity by talking to your friends and neighbors about Freemasonry and the Valley of Peoria. Page 10 Scottish Rite News First of all, I want to thank you for re-electing me to the Cathedral board of the Scottish Rite. The past year I have been struggling to fulfill my duties and presence on the board due to career demands, however, those circumstances have since changed (for the better!) and I m looking forward to refocusing my efforts on the Valley. Over the past several years, it has been interesting to see the ebb and flow of problems and solutions across the various Masonic bodies where I hold a membership card. Of note is an obvious erosion of membership numbers and participation. Let s face it: the fraternal boom of the past is gone, which is unfortunate, but participation and stickiness is where we fail our members. I GET IT. For nearly a year after I was raised, bestowed the 32nd degree, and became a Shriner, I checked out and didn t participate. I didn t know anyone, I was new to Peoria, and quite frankly, had no idea where I fit. A year after I became a card carrier of the Valley, Don Edwards sent out a request for cast members for the 16th degree the Fall 2012 Reunion. I took a chance, put myself out there, and responded to Don, taking a sizable part in the degree. I went from card carrier to active member. My point is simple: members who I don t know and never see, get involved! That s intimidating, especially not knowing anyone, which I GET. So, like Don, I will ask for volunteers. We all joined these organizations for a reason; we re not that different. I m looking for volunteers to continue the legacy of these organizations, specifically the Valley of Peoria, forming and evolving what the membership is wanting today. I am not eager to take your personal time away, but rather give you a solid return on your membership investment ROI. If you want to get involved (or re-involved), give me a call or shoot me an email and let s figure out what that looks like: 309-210-6707 or john.mitchell.jmm@gmail.com. If you want me to get off my soapbox, please email dfedwards@sbcglobal.net as really, my involvement in all of this is really Don s fault Talk soon, John Mitchell
