Main Topic 16: International Affairs Lesson 89: Immigration (18-25 minutes) Today, you will practice your Reading and Listening Skills as you study texts related to INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS. I. READING Exercise 1: What s missing? (5-6 minutes) Read the following MAGAZINE ARTICLE carefully. Choose the best word that would fill in the blanks. Illegal Residence Among Teenagers Is On Fire! The issue of illegal immigration has reached a fever pitch. But what about those who are caught in the cross-hairs and didn't even know it? Economists at Bear Stearns, a leading Wall Street firm, tell us there are almost 20 million people living in the United States. Many of them are school-aged kids. a. undocument b. undocumented c. undocumenting d. undocumentation According to a recent article by Anne Ryman of The Arizona Republic, nearly 4,000 college students in Arizona were denied in-state tuition because they failed to prove legal residency. More than 185,431 people were deported from the US last year, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Arizona, Oklahoma, and Utah have passed new legislation that will make it tougher for undocumented immigrants to live and work in those states. law has become a hot-button issue for politicians throughout the country. a. Emigration b. Immigration c. Migration d. Immigrate The good news for teenagers is: as long as they are under the age of 18, the government does not hold their undocumented status against them. There are options available to these children. But the quicker they act, the easier it will be. Adults over 18 may also have a good chance, especially those who have at least one family member who is already an American Citizen. Hardship Waivers, which can allow an undocumented person to legally stay in the US, are by immigration officials surprisingly often. 1

Exercise 2: Reading Check-up (3-4 minutes) Answer the following questions based on the previous text. 1. How many people have been deported from US last year according to DHS? 2. If you live in the US and your child has not filed yet for legal residency, what should you do? Exercise 3: Compare and Connect (3-5 minutes) Read the following ADVERTISEMENT and try to answer the questions that follow. USCIS: BE A US CITIZEN NOW! Good news to all those who want to get a naturalization! The USCIS is offering a 5% discount on its fees for naturalization process for this year! Who can avail of the discount? All school-aged students who are not yet naturalized. Requirements for discount privileges: *School ID *Birth Certificate So moms and dads! What are you waiting for? Have your child be a US citizen now and get a 5% discount on the naturalization fee! 2
