Meet biographer Rita Joiner Soza and former students of Dr. Bailey at Vroman s Bookstore on Saturday, September 19 at 4 p.m. Helen Miller Bailey: Pioneer Educator and Renaissance Woman Who Shaped Chicano Leaders recounts the 43-year East Los Angeles teaching career of one of the most important Californian women. Her story, told through newspaper accounts, student and Bailey scholarship-recipients interviews, her own travel diaries, and colleague interviews is augmented with family photos and sketches of a few of her over 900 paintings. Dr. Bailey s legacy is sure to inspire educators, students, community activists, and political leaders. Born on a Modesto dairy farm, she made East Los Angeles her home and embraced the Mexican-American people and culture on a personal and professional level writing seminal literature on Latin American Civilization in 1955. In Working for Justice from the Grave, chapter of the biography of Dr. Bailey (1909 1976), Soza describes how the repeal of California s involuntary sterilization law in 1983 was the direct result of the leadership of five Latino(a) former students of Dr. Bailey. Through individual interviews the five revealed their individual role in the 1983 legislation action, as well as the profound personal and professional impact of their East Los Angeles College professor. In addition to the book s engaging website http://www.helenmillerbaileybio.com readers are encouraged to visit USC s film archive, at http://uschefnerarchive.com/project/baileyfilms/ where 50 films, shot from 1934 to 1975, by Dr. Bailey on her worldwide travels, have been digitized in conjunction with the book s release. These films offer insight into her innovative teaching techniques and unique status as a female travel filmmaker on the lecture circuit in the forties and fifties in Los Angeles.
