CLINTON S PRESIDENCY 1994 The United States, Mexico, and Canada sign an agreement to eliminate tariffs and open trade Agreement is known as the North American Free Trade Agreement (more commonly known as NAFTA)
CLINTON S PRESIDENCY 1998 Clinton is accused of having an affair with a 22 year old White House intern, Monica Lewinsky Clinton confessed under oath that he did not have sexual relations with that woman, Ms. Lewinsky. During an extensive investigation it was proven that Clinton was lying and indeed did have an affair with Lewinsky The House of Representatives voted to impeach the President for perjury. Perjury lying under oath The Senate however failed to vote for impeachment and Clinton was subsequently acquitted.
CLINTON S PRESIDENCY In 1995, Timothy McVeigh bombed the Federal Building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 people. In 1999, two student gunmen opened fire in Columbine High School, Colorado, killing 12 students and a teacher.
THE CONTROVERSIAL 2000 ELECTION The 2000 Presidential Election became one of the most controversial in US history. Clinton s Vice-President, Al Gore, won the popular vote, but lost the electoral vote to Republican candidate George W. Bush A legal struggle broke out after accounts of voter fraud and intimidation left disputed results in the state of Florida. The Florida Supreme Court agreed to a recount of the state s votes. However the US Supreme Court stepped in, stopping the recount and awarding Florida s 27 electoral votes to Bush Questions remained as to whether or not the Electoral College was still relevant and if the system should stay.

This plane was thought to be heading for White House. The international terrorist organization Al Qaeda eventually claimed responsibility for the attacks. BUSH S PRESIDENCY March 2003 President Bush asks Congress to declare war on Iraq for a 2 nd time due to Saddam Hussein s possession of weapons of mass destruction and its alliance with known terrorist groups. War in Iraq becomes a very divisive subject in the US Many feared US involvement in Iraq was for economic purposes and not part of the War on Terrorism but Saddam did have close ties to Al Qaeda and bin Laden May 2003 Bush delivers a speech on the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln declaring Mission Accomplished in Iraq after the overthrow of Saddam s regime However, due to uprisings throughout Iraq of Muslim extremists and terrorists fighting continued for almost 8 more years
