Registration begins at 8:30 and the training will be from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Family Justice Center, 400 Harriet Tubman Street, Knoxville, Tennessee 37915. Directions are enclosed. Legal Advocacy for Victims of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Presented by: Robin Kimbrough and Kathy Walsh January 26, 2007 8:30 am to 4:00 pm Family Justice Center Knoxville, Tennessee 37915 865.215.6800 This training is for new advocates and will include: Basics of civil and criminal law in cases of domestic and sexual violence; The role of the advocate and tips on avoiding the unauthorized practice of law; and An opportunity to practice advocacy techniques and problem-solving skills. Robin Harris Kimbrough, Esq. Robin Harris Kimbrough, Esq. is Legal Counsel for the Coalition and has worked with public interest issues for over ten years. This Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Fisk University received her law degree from Emory School of Law in 1995. Upon graduation, she received an appointment as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Tennessee and continued her legal career in the private and public sectors of law forging change on issues concerning the protection of children and their families, especially those involved in the foster care system. She has also served as a Night Court Commissioner for the General Sessions Court, Davidson County, Tennessee and a professor on womanist/feminist issues in the Africana Studies Department and the Women's Studies Program at Tennessee State University. Besides her law endeavors, Attorney Kimbrough holds a Master of Divinity degree from Vanderbilt Divinity School and has served as a pastor in the United Methodist Church, Tennessee Conference for six years. Kathy England Walsh Kathy England Walsh is the Executive Director of the Tennessee Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence. With over eighteen years of experience in crisis intervention, Ms. Walsh provides training and technical assistance to communities, monitors state and federal legislation, and works on public policy issues of concern to victims of domestic and sexual violence. Ms. Walsh developed a model Law Enforcement Training Project through which over 8,000 Tennessee police officers have been trained to date. Ms. Walsh co-authored the Domestic Violence Interdiction Law Enforcement Curriculum and the Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Law Enforcement Curriculum being used by law enforcement agencies throughout the country. She also co-authored the Tennessee Model Law Enforcement Policy and State Standards for Domestic Violence Programs. As a member of the Tennessee Domestic Violence State Coordinating Council, Ms. Walsh assisted in the creation of the Domestic Abuse Bench Book, the Model Domestic Violence Court Policy and State Rules and Certification Process for Batterer s Intervention Programs. Ms. Walsh was chosen as the recipient of the 2003 Award for Outstanding Advocacy and Community Work in Ending Sexual Violence presented by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center. In her sixteenth year as Director of the Tennessee Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence, Ms. Walsh has successfully advocated for more than 100 new laws to improve safety for victims of domestic and sexual violence and assisted in the development of domestic violence shelters, rape crisis centers and community task forces throughout the state. Tennessee Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence Training Policy Effective January 1, 2006 Registration must be made 48 hours prior to the workshop/meeting/training. Payment is required prior to or day of training, and can be made by credit card, check, or cash. If breakfast or lunch is included in the fee and you do not register for the workshop/meeting/training 48 hours prior to the start time, you may not receive a breakfast or lunch as we order food based on the number of registrations. If you come to a workshop/meeting/training without pre-registering, you will be able to attend only if there is available room. You will also be required to pay for the meeting at that time. Cancellation must be made a full 24 hours prior to the start time of the workshop/meeting/training. If it is made less than 24 hours before the event, you will be charged in full for the event. If an outstanding invoice remains for you or your agency, you will not be able to attend Coalition trainings or events until you have resolved the issue with the Business Department of the Tennessee Coalition.
