Most cards do not list the surname of the sender either. One suspects many of these cards were sent to Folsom while he was governor of Alabama, as it was noted that these cards arrived mainly in the period 1945-1960. Of particular interest is a list of Alabama life insurance companies and a history of Coastal States Life Insurance Co., and an article on Folsom in The Alabama Insurer (Jan. 1955). Unarranged. Reels 6-52 and 57-61 This series contains six subseries detailed below: 1. 1942 campaign for governor, 1942; 2. 1946 campaign for governor, 1945-1946; 3. 1954 campaign for governor, 1953-1955 and n.d.; 4. 1962 campaign for governor, 1958-1962 and n.d.; 5. 1960 Ed Pepper campaign for public service commissioner,1960; and 6. 1960 national campaign, 1960-1961. The largest subseries are the second, third, and fourth ones, with the remaining subseries consisting of only one or two folders. In the second and third subseries are many letters regarding political patronage. See also series D. Political Correspondence, 1951-1954, and the Governor s files (state government records) for Folsom s two terms in office and for more letters regarding Folsom s political activities generally, and specifically political patronage. Sometimes several letters from a correspondent covering several months were stapled together by the Folsom staff. The date on the top letter is the one used for filing purposes. Election results from the Democratic primary 5 May 1942, a map showing how well Folsom ran in 1942, and a biographical sketch. Box 6, Folder 1 1942 Reel 6 2. 1946 CAMPAIGN FOR GOVERNOR, 1945-1947. This subseries contains seven divisions detailed below: a) Correspondence, 1945-1946; b) Subject and correspondents file, 1945-1946; c) Photographs and printing plates, 1945-1946; d) Election returns, 1946; e) Lists, n.d.; f) Financial records, 1945-1946; and g) Printed materials, 1945-1946. a) Correspondence, 1945-1947. This grouping chiefly concerns the 1946 campaign cycle. It includes letters from citizens both supporting and opposing Folsom and letters discussing campaign tactics and strategy. Letters from other gubernatorial candidates and candidates for other offices are also present. In addition, political patronage and other matters are discussed. Several county and beat level lists are included, some of which are attached to letters. Many congratulatory letters and telegrams arrived after the May primary and the November general election, as well as the January 1947 inauguration. Murrary A. Battles answered for Folsom often. POLITICAL CORRESPONDENCE, 1951-1954 Reels 52-56 This series contains many letters from Alabama politicians prominent at the state and local levels. The content of many letters is not obviously political, but maintaining the person as a political contact was important. Folsom specifically attempted to maintain and create contacts to assure his election in 1954, and much of this material could have been filed in series C. Political Campaigns, 3. 1954 Campaign for Governor. From May to December 1954 there are many letters to Folsom regarding political patronage and seeking his help with jobs, pensions, social security, pardons and paroles, among other topics. Many similar letters can be found in the Political Campaigns series for both the 1946 and 1954 gubernatorial campaigns. Also filed here are some election returns from Democratic primaries for various offices. Arranged alphabetically by county, and then within chronologically by year and, for the larger counties, by month. Some folders are unarranged. F. SCRAPBOOKS, 1946-1962 These scrapbooks primarily document Alabama political life, especially Folsom s campaigns for governor, and the Folsom family.
