Hatton Rockall Area 1 Introduction This submission to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf is made by the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK) pursuant to Article 76, paragraph 8 of the Convention in support of the establishment of the outer limit of the continental shelf in the Hatton Rockall Area situated to the northwest of the UK mainland. 2 Outer limit of the continental shelf in the Hatton Rockall Area The present submission deals only with the outer limit of the continental shelf in the Hatton Rockall Area and is thus a partial submission of the UK. 3 Provisions of Article 76 invoked The outer limits contained in this submission are based on the provisions of Article 76 paragraphs 4 and 5. 4 Names of any Commission members who provided advice during the preparation of the submission No advice was provided by any member of the Commission. 5 Areas of Overlapping Interest In accordance with paragraph 2 of Annex 1 to the Commission s Rules of Procedure, the United Kingdom can confirm that Ireland and the United Kingdom reached agreement in 1988 on a delimitation of the continental shelf. As regards Denmark (in respect of the Faroe Islands) and Iceland, each of them has made claims to areas which overlap those which are the subject of this submission, and discussions have taken place over a number of years to resolve the issue. The United Kingdom will continue to participate in these discussions with a view to reaching an agreement. However, the United Kingdom is mindful of the obligation upon States Parties to the Convention, set out in Article 4 of Annex II to the Convention, to make submissions to the Commission within ten years of the date of entry into force of the Convention for that State, as well as the decision of the Eleventh Meeting of States Parties to the Convention held in May 2001. The effect is that the United Kingdom has to make its submissions to the Commission by 13 May 2009, and in Hatton Rockall Area Continental Shelf Submission 1

order to comply with its obligations, the United Kingdom is making this submission to the Commission now. 6 Description of the outer limit of the Continental Shelf round Hatton Rockall Area The outer limit in the Hatton Rockall Area has been determined using both the formula lines provided in Article 76. A 60 nautical mile limit measured from the foot of the slope (Hedberg formula) has been generated from all the foot of slope points (FOS 1 to FOS 8). Sufficient sediment thickness has, in the view of the UK, been demonstrated on the seismic data submitted and allows the application of the 1% sediment thickness formula (the Gardiner or Irish formula) from points FOS 7 and 8. Foot of Slope positions FOS5 and 6 do not contribute to the final outer limit construction. The final outer limit is landward of the constraint lines defined by Article 76 paragraph 5. Accordingly, the outer limit consists of straight lines, each less than 60 nautical miles as provided for in Article 76 paragraph 7, joining 28 fixed points 60 nautical miles from Foot of the Slope positions FOS 1 to 4 and 2 fixed points at 1% sediment thickness based on Foot of Slope positions FOS 7 and 8. 7 State bodies responsible for the preparation of the Submission This submission, together with all maps, figures, enclosures, appendices and digital databases was prepared jointly by the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, UK, the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office and the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office. 8 Acknowledgements The UK gratefully acknowledges the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources of Ireland for access to unpublished geophysical data used in this submission.
