Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Theta Pi Chapter Bylaws Article: Name The name of this chapter shall be the Theta Pi chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. The chapter shall be composed of undergraduate Sorors as defined by the Constitution and Bylaws of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Article II: Purpose The purpose of Theta Pi is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women, to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college life and to be of service to all mankind as stated in the Constitution and Bylaws of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Article III: Membership Active Undergraduate Member- Membership in the chapter is classified as an active undergraduate member. She meets the academic, fulltime student status and financial requirements and has no penalties or sanctions imposed by the University. The academic requirement is a cumulative and semester grade point average of C+, and fulltime status of at least 12 hours. An exception is granted to seniors, in their last semester, in which the University has approved for an underload in addition to the approval of the Regional Director. Withdrawal of privileges include the member can attend chapter meetings but do not have a vote. The member cannot hold any office elected or appointed. The member also cannot attend conferences or chapter programs. Section 1. (Qualifications for memberships): All candidates for membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha, through the Theta Pi 1

chapters, will be initiated in strict accordance with Alpha Kappa Alpha s Constitution and Bylaws, Manual of Standard Procedure, and the Undergraduate Membership Intake Process Manual. Section 2. (Assessments, Fees or Dues): Active Sorors must meet all financial require for the current fiscal year of both Theta Pi and Alpha Kappa Alpha. All active members are required to pay any extra assessments and/or fees incurred during the year that has been voted on by the chapter. Annual dues are due not later than December 31. The chapter may vote to assess members for chapter events. Section 3. (Inactive Members): A member will be considered inactive is she is academically ineligible or if her outstanding debts are not paid. Section 4. (Resignations): An elected or appointed officer who is unable to fulfill her duties may resign by submitting a letter of resignation to the chapter. A special election will be held to fill vacant elected positions. The Basileus will appoint members to vacant appointed positions. Section 5. (Disciplinary Actions): Any member who violates Theta Pi and or Alpha Kappa Alpha Constitution and Bylaws, who disregards established procedures, who constantly neglects or fails to discharge her duties can be removed from office by a two-thirds (2/3) vote of the chapter after findings have been presented to a disciplinary committee comprised of 2 members of the graduate advisors council and 3 members of the chapter. Article IV: Officers Section 1. (Elected Officers and Duties): Elected officers are the List in Order of Rank as Basileus, Anti-Basileus, Grammateus, Anti-Grammateus, Tamiouchos, Pecunious Grammateus, Epistoleus, and Ivy Leaf Reporter A. Basileus: Presides over chapter and executive meetings; oversees all operations of the chapter; represents the chapter at all meetings, conferences, and other civic or social affairs; a member of all standing and special committees; familiar with Theta Pi and Alpha Kappa Alpha documents, and Robert s Rules of Order (newly revised). 2

B. Anti-Basileus: Presides over chapter meeting and executive meetings in the absence of the Basileus; chairs the program committee and directs program activities; represents the Basileus, by request, at meetings, conferences, and other civic, or social affairs; familiar with chapter and Alpha Kappa Alpha documents and Robert s Rules of Order (newly revised) C. Grammateus: Maintains accurate records of all chapter proceedings; establishes quorum; presides in the absence of the Basileus and Anti-Basileus. D. Anti-Grammateus: maintains accurate records of all executive meeting proceedings; establishes quorum; serves in the absence of the Grammateus. E. Tamiouchos: Manages the chapter funds; chairs the finance committee. F. Pecunious Grammateus: Receives and receipts all income to the chapter; serves on the finance committee. G. Epistoleus: Maintains a file of all correspondence sent to Theta Pi. H. Ivy Leaf Reporter: Responsible for coordinating all media coverage and publicity for Theta Pi events; chairs the public relation committee. Section 2. (Appointed Officers): Appointed officers are the Parliamentarian, Chaplain, Historian, Philacter, and Hodegos A. Parliamentarian: Assists the Basileus in interpreting polices and procedures of the chapter; chairs the constitutions and disciplinary committees. B. Chaplain: Provides spiritual guidance to the chapter. 3

C. Historian: Maintains a narrative account of Theta Pi history and activities; oversees Theta Pi s storage facility. D. Philacter: Stands as guardian of the door during executive, chapter, and sorority rituals. E. Hodegos: Coordinates courtesies for special events and chairs the social committee. Section 3. (Terms of Office): Each term will be for one (1) academic year or until graduation. Section 4. (Nominations and Elections): Nominations will be accepted in October and elections will be held in November. Section 5. (Eligibility): Member must be an active undergraduate member of the chapter, be in good academic standing, have attended at least 80% of Theta Pi s regular business meetings, and must have actively participate in Theta Pi s program activities. Section 6. (Graduate Advisor/Assistant Graduate Advisor): The Graduate Advisor and/or Assistant Graduate Advisor shall serve as a link between the graduate and undergraduate chapter. It shall be the duty of the Graduate Advisor and/or Assistant Graduate Advisor to support and advise the Undergraduate Chapter with operations, activities, and any area(s) of concerns. The Graduate Advisor and/or Assistant Graduate Advisor will ensure that the Sorors of the undergraduate chapter will be the decision makers and lead their chapter s operations. Article V: Meetings Section 1. (Chapter Meetings): Chapter meetings are held on the fourth Sunday of each month during the academic year. Chapter meetings are subject to change at the discretion and vote of current chapter members. Section 2. (Executive Meetings): Executive meetings are held on the second Sunday of each month during the academic 4

school year. Executive meetings are subject to change at the discretion and vote of current chapter members. Section 3. (Special Meetings): The Basileus can call a special meeting of the chapter either on her own accord, on the request of the Graduate Advisor(s) or on the request of one-third (1/3) of the total active chapter membership. Section 4. (Meetings with Mu Omicron Omega): Theta Pi will have at least two (2) joint meetings per year with the Mu Omicron Omega Chapter. Section 5. (Committee Meetings): Committee chairs will determine the date, time and location of monthly committee meetings. Section 6. (Quorum): Two-thirds (2/3) of the active chapter membership presents establishes quorum; quorum must be established to vote on recommendations. Section 7. (Meeting Notifications): Members will be notified via the Theta Pi listserv of meeting dates, time and locations. Article VI: Executive Committees Section 1. (Composition): Consists of all elected officers and committee chairs. Section 2. (Powers): Empowered to conduct chapter business when the chapter cannot meet. Section 3. (Meetings): Any active member may attend executive meetings, but only executive committee members may vote. The Basileus will be the chair. Section 4. (Quorum): Two-thirds (2/3) of the executive committee establishes quorum; quorum must be established to vote on recommendations. Article VII: Committees A. Nominating: Consists of five (5) members elected by the membership. This committee will convent to oversee the officer election process. The member with the most votes will be chair. 5

B. Membership: Consists of all active members of Theta Pi. Assists in the planning and execution of all membership intake process activities. C. Public Relations: Oversees the publicity, media coverage, and creates distributes chapter newsletter. The Ivy Leaf Reporter will be the chair. D. Constitution: Assists in interpreting Theta Pi and Alpha Kappa Alpha documents; the Parliamentarian will be the chair. E. Standards: Establishes the criteria and implements Theta Pi s evaluation. F. Program: Consists of all active members of Theta Pi. Coordinates the planning and execution of all Theta Pi programs. The Anti-Basileus will be the chair. G. Finance: Prepares and supervises the operation of Theta Pi s annual budget; supports the Theta Pi s fundraising efforts. The Tamiouchos will be the chair. H. Social: Plans and executes all sisterly relations activities and provides courtesies on special occasions. The Hodegos will be the chair. I. History: Maintains a narrative account of all chapter activities; oversees the chapter s storage facility. J. Connection: Implements strategies to inform the chapter of political issues and trends. K. Technology: Maintains Theta Pi s website and addresses technology issues as they relate to chapter operations. 6

L. Scholarships/EAF/Awards: Implements the scholarship process, serves as the chapter EAF captain and compiles award submissions for sorority conferences. M. Alumna Relations: Coordinates alumna events and anniversary celebrations. Article VIII: Special and Ad hoc Committees Section 1: The Basileus shall create committees as needed to facilitate the purpose and objectives of Chapter. Article IX: Parliamentary Authority The governing documents will be used in said order: 1. National Constitution and Bylaws 2. Manual of Standard Procedure 3. Chapter Bylaws 4. The rules contained in the current edition of Robert s Rules of Order Newly Revised. Article X: Amendment of the Bylaws Section 1. (Power to Make Bylaws) The chapter has the power to amend its own bylaws that are not in direct conflict Alpha Kappa Alpha s Constitution and Bylaws or Manual of Standard Procedures. Section 2. (Amendments): Amendments will requires a twothirds (2/3) vote of the active membership at a meeting or special meeting for this purpose. Article XI: Dissolution Upon dissolution of the Chapter, its assets shall be distributed for one or more exempt purposes within the meaning of Sec 501(c)(7) of the Internal Revenue code or corresponding section of any future federal tax code, or for one or more exempt purposes within in the meaning of Sec 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, or 7

corresponding section of any future federal tax code, or shall be distributed to the federal government, or to a state or local government, for a public purpose. 8
