1) Why did France begin to have more of an interest in colonies in America and how/where did they go about making them? France gained more interest in having colonies in America because the Edict of Nantes (KEY!!!) was finally issued. They went about establishing their colonies in Canada. 2) What did France primarily do in the America's? France primarily hunted down beavers with the Indians so that they could use them for fur and meat. 3) What were France's goals and aspirations while colonizing the Americas? France wanted to conquer as much land as they could throughout all of North America and establish as many settlements and colonies as they could. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4) What were the roots of these clashes between Britain and France in "the New World?" The cause for the clashes between Britain and France was the competition arising with both nations wanting to expand their land. This would lead to disagreements and small battles leading into wars, which would result in England winning both and taking some land from France. Nantes, Edict of (1598) French royal decree establishing toleration for Huguenots (Protestants). It granted freedom of worship and legal equality for Huguenots within limits, and ended the Wars of Religion. The Edict was revoked by Louis XIV in 1685, causing many Huguenots to emigrate to the Americas. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jecwyubmnle
Edict of Nantes: signed probably on 30 April 1598, by Henry IV of France, granted the Calvinist Protestants of France (also known as Huguenots) substantial rights in the nation, which was, at the time, still considered essentially Catholic. In the Edict, Henry aimed primarily to promote civil unity.[1] The Edict separated civil from religious unity, treated some Protestants for the first time as more than mere schismatics and heretics, and opened a path for secularism and tolerance. In offering general freedom of conscience to individuals, the Edict offered many specific concessions to the Protestants, such as amnesty and the reinstatement of their civil rights, including the right to work in any field or for the State and to bring grievances directly to the king. It marked the end of the religious wars that had afflicted France during the second half of the 16th century. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- https://sites.google.com/site/antiochapush/period2/key-concepts REACTION HINT HERE: Key Concept 2.1 European Colonization and Migration Europeans developed a variety of colonization and migration patterns, influenced by different imperial goals, cultures, and the varied North American environments where they settled, and they competed with each other and American Indians for resources. Spanish, French, Dutch, and British colonizers had different economic and imperial goals involving land and labor that shaped the social and political development of their colonies as well as their relationships with native populations. Spanish efforts to extract wealth from the land led them to develop institutions based on subjugating native populations, converting them to Christianity, and incorporating them, along with enslaved and free Africans, into the Spanish colonial society. French and Dutch colonial efforts involved relatively few Europeans and relied on trade alliances and intermarriage with American Indians to build economic and diplomatic relationships and acquire furs and other products for export to Europe. English colonization efforts attracted a comparatively large number of male and female British migrants, as well as other European migrants, all of whom sought social mobility, economic prosperity, religious freedom, and improved living conditions. These colonists focused on agriculture and settled on land taken from Native Americans, from whom they lived separately. Colonization in North America. Columbus's discovery of America led to a period of European exploration and colonization. A country colonizes land when it sets up settlements, or colonies, or people and controls the economies and governments in them. The Spaniards founded the first European colonies in America.
