ANSWER KEY 1. What circumstances led to the fall of the Liberal Government of Mackenzie- King in 1930? He was unprepared for the crisis and refused to offer federal aid for struggling Canadians. He also showed contempt towards Conservative provincial governments. 2. Outline PM Bennet s initial response to the Great Depression. The Unemployment Relief Act which gave $ to provinces for work creation programs. Raised Tariffs to protect Canadian domestic industries from foreign competition. Introduced the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Act in 1935 to rebuild farms. 3. Despite his best efforts, PM Bennet became very unpopular with many Canadians. What evidence supports this claim? His initial responses neither improved the economy nor improved the lives of many Canadians. They called deserted farms Bennet barnyards, newspapers Bennet blankets, and cars pulled by horses Bennet buggies. This indicates that they both blamed and ridiculed PM Bennet. 4. What was the On-to-Ottawa Trek of 1935? What were the grievances of the protestors?

Relief camp workers protested against camp and work conditions by first gathering in Vancouver, then taking the train together across the country to try to reach Ottawa. Their numbers reaches 2000 by the time they reached Regina, Sask. 5. Describe PM Bennet s response to the protestors. PM Bennet offered them no sympathy, and labeled them as Communist troublemakers. 6. What was the Regina Riot? At Regina, the trekkers were held by the RCMP in a stadium, and later battled with police in an incident known as the Regina Riot. 7. What actions precipitated social protest in Vancouver in 1936? What forms of protest did some Vancouverites take? The federal government closed relief camps and reduced relief payments in 1936. The protestors participated in sit-ins at public buildings and spaces (such as at the Georgia Hotel and Art Gallery. 8. What was President Roosevelt s New Deal, and what did it achieve? A program of public works aimed at creating jobs and reinvigorating the US economy using tax dollars and borrowed loans. Created the Social Security Act, which provided social assistance in the form of old age pension, employment insurance, and financial assistance for mothers and children. While Roosevelt s opponents claimed it was wasteful, his supporters credited him with helping millions to survive and with providing hope at a desperate time.

9. Describe PM Bennet s New Deal. Why did many Canadians judge it to be too little, too late (p.104)? Bennet s version of Pres. Roosevelt s policies. Progressive taxation tied to income % (ie: if you make more, you pay more tax). Employment insurance for workers. Legal changes to work laws (eg: safety, hours, minimum wage) Revised pension rules to support workers over 65 yrs old. Created the Wheat Board and agricultural support programs. Changes to EI and tax laws did not help those who were already unemployed. 10. What is the CBC, and why was it created in 1936? Ran Canadian-produced music and entertainment programs in French and English. Attempt to protect Canadian culture from the dominance of American radio entertainment.
