Tim Malloy, Assistant Director (203) 645-8043 FOR RELEASE: APRIL 10, 2018 Rubenstein Pat Smith (212) 843-8026 U.S. VOTERS SAY 5-1, DON T FIRE SPECIAL COUNSEL, QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY NATIONAL POLL FINDS; TRUMP APPROVAL TOPS 40% FOR FIRST TIME IN A YEAR President Donald Trump should not fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller, American voters say 69 13 percent in a Quinnipiac University National Poll released today. Even Republicans say 55 22 percent that President Trump should not fire Mueller. American voters say 52 32 percent that Mueller is conducting a fair investigation, the lowest level of support for Mueller since the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University Poll first asked this question in November. Republicans say 54 30 percent the investigation is not fair. Every other party, gender, education, age and racial group says the investigation is fair. Voters believe 58 14 percent that President Trump had an extramarital affair in 2006 with an actress known as Stormy Daniels. Republicans are divided 32 32 percent, with 36 percent undecided. Every other group believes there was an affair. But voters say 73 23 percent that this alleged affair is not an important issue. Voters also believe 59 24 percent that Trump knew his lawyer paid $130,000 right before the 2016 presidential election to secure Daniels silence about this alleged affair. Again, voters say 59 38 percent that Trump s possible knowledge of the payoff is not an important issue. There is only the smallest of gender gaps on these questions. American voters in huge numbers, including a majority of Republicans, tell President Donald Trump: Keep your hands off Special Counsel Robert Mueller, said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll. Yes he did it. No we don t care. A big yawn from voters on Stormy Daniels, President Trump and the payoff. -more-
Quinnipiac University Poll/April 10, 2018 page 2 More American voters back mainstream media as 49 percent say journalists at major news organizations report stories about President Trump to the best of their knowledge, while 41 percent say journalists make up negative stories about President Trump. There are wide party, gender and racial gaps on this question: Republicans say 80 12 percent that journalists make up stories. Democrats back journalists 89 6 percent and independent voters are divided as 46 percent say journalists report to the best of their knowledge and 43 percent say they make up stories. Men are divided 46 45 percent while women side with journalists 54 37 percent; White voters are divided 47 45 percent as black voters side with journalists 79 7 percent and Hispanic voters back journalists 56 36 percent. American voters say 67 27 percent that Trump should stop tweeting from his personal account. Republicans are divided as 49 percent say Trump should keep tweeting and 45 percent say he should stop. Every other group says by wide margins, the president should stop tweeting. Voters 18 to 34 years old say 70 26 percent that Trump should stop tweeting. Trump Job Approval Trump gets a negative 41 52 percent job approval rating, the first time his approval rating has topped 40 percent since an identical 41 52 percent score in a March 7, 2017 Quinnipiac University National Poll. American voters give Trump a split 47 48 percent approval for handling the economy and a divided 46 47 percent approval for handling taxes. Approval ratings on other issues are negative: 39 55 percent on foreign policy; 42 55 percent on immigration; 40 52 percent on trade. From April 6 9, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,181 voters nationwide with a margin of error of +/- 3.4 percentage points, including the design effect. Live interviewers call landlines and cell phones.
