What Happens Next? A Conference Committee will be created, with Senate and House members, to reach an agreement between the differing budgets. It is the Conference Committee that will determine the final funding levels for housing. Scheduled to begin February 26.

Media Coverage Editorial Florida needs housing first for homeless: Where We Stand February 5, 2016 Central Florida has been leading the way in reducing chronic homelessness in the Sunshine State. Now a smart proposal in the Legislature would reinforce this region s effort, and give more communities across Florida the means to follow suit. Legislators should go with the Senate numbers in the budget they send to Scott's desk. According to the Sadowski Coalition, a broad-based statewide group that supports affordable housing, full funding would leverage at least four times as much in private financing, create 32,600 jobs and pump $4.6 billion into Florida's economy.

Media Coverage Editorial Editorial: Florida s Affordable-housing programs need money February 5, 2016 Add us to the list of groups and organizations asking the state Legislature to fully fund this year s request for affordable housing. Last week, the Senate did the right thing by allowing full funding about $317 million for the SHIP/Housing Trust Fund and the State Apartment Incentive Loan (SAIL) program for next year s budget. SHIP is the State Housing Initiatives Partnership program. It funds housing programs in all 67 counties. The SAIL money can be used to rehab apartments that desperately need repair or to build new units, that house Florida s most vulnerable populations, such as the frail, elderly and persons with disabilities, the Sadowski Housing Coalition said in information they provided during a visit to the News Journal Editorial Board before the legislative session began.

Media Coverage Editorial Our View: Renew Commitment to Affordable Housing February 4, 2016 The Florida Senate s proposed budget for 2016-17 would help restore some trust in the Legislature s use of funds dedicated to affordable housing. The Senate recently decided to allocate all available housing trust monies some $317 million to housing in the next budget year. Many Floridians may wonder: What s the big deal? Isn t the Legislature supposed to put a specific share of revenue from documentary stamps into housing funds? The answer is: Yes.

Media Coverage Op-Ed Ted Granger: Legislature Must Provide Housing Money for Struggling Floridians By Ted Granger, President, United Way of Florida January 26, 2016 Unfortunately, the cost of housing is too high for many ALICE households and housing and rental costs continue to rise. Affordable rental units are in short supply, as there are more than twice as many ALICE and poverty renters than there are affordable rental units. And, while there may be housing units where ALICE households can afford the mortgage, these households often lack sufficient resources for a down payment or do not qualify for a mortgage. Increasing the amount of housing that ALICE households can afford would provide stability for many Florida families. We hope that during the 2016 Legislative Session the Legislature fully funds these programs.

ACTION For HOUSE Contact your Representatives. Ask them to contact Speaker Crisafulli and Chair Corcoran with this request: Support full appropriation for housing in the budget For SENATE Contact your Senator. Ask them to contact President Gardiner and Chair Lee with this request: Hold firm to full appropriation for housing in budget. And Thank You!
