The Democratic Challenge People often say that, in a democracy, decisions are made by a majority of the people. Of course, that is not true. Decisions are made by a majority of those who make themselves heard and who vote - a very different thing. ~Walter H. Judd (1898-1994) 1994) Intro to DoubleclickDemocracy-Kickoff--Aug31 2
What Is Kids Voting? Kids Voting is a national non-profit, non- partisan program in which students in grades K-12 K study portions of a special Citizenship Activities Guide and then go to Kids Voting polls on or near Election Day to cast ballots on the same candidates and issues as the adult voters. Intro to DoubleclickDemocracy-Kickoff--Aug31 3
How Did Kids Voting Begin in the U.S.? It began in 1988 in Phoenix, Arizona after three businessmen came back from a trip to Costa Rico. In 1992, the program began expanding nationally. Today, 25 states and almost 40 affiliates participate in the Kids Voting USA program. Intro to DoubleclickDemocracy-Kickoff--Aug31 4
MISSION OF KIDS VOTING The intent is to develop lifetime voting habits in young people and help assure that they will assume their civic responsibility as adults. And the goal is not just about voting. Kids Voting is an around-the the-year citizenship program that teaches students the basics of responsible, active citizenship, i.e., know the issues, know the candidates, vote, research, compromise, make decisions, be a watchdog, hold the elected officials accountable, identify public policy issues, discuss issues, develop action plans to deal with issues, & take action. Kids Voting Outcomes Secures the future of democracy by educating and involving young people in the election process of today. Generates a "trickle-up" effect that is, kids stimulating their parents to learn about citizenship & voting. Provides a training ground for living as a proactive citizen in democracy. Assists students in learning and practicing social studies, communication arts, math and other show-me skills. Gives students an opportunity to learn about the three branches of government and see those branches in action before and after the votes are counted. Involves as many students as possible in active citizenship education activities thereby contributing to a revitalized democracy that includes American youth as informed and active participants.
