Point Reyes Place. The goal of the meeting is to decide on which candidates the Club will endorse for the openings for the ABCUSD School Board in time to affect the endorsements from the LA County Republican Central Committee on September 8. The four Republican candidates will be interviewed individually. This will be followed by a Club discussion with the goal of producing endorsements. MARK YOUR CALENDAR The next CRC General meeting will be on Tuesday, September 13, at 7:00 pm in the Skyline Room of the Cerritos Library, 18025 Bloomfield Aveune. The program will feature Labor attorney Adam Abrams and Kevin Korinthal, Executive Director of Associated Builders and Contractors, California Cooperation Committee in a dialogue on dealing with labor unions. Pino and Jyoti Pathak Award Winners Congratulations to Pino and Jyoti Pathak for being named Award Winners in the annual City Wide Pride Beautification Program. All winners were honored at a Banquet on August 5 at the Sheraton Hotel. Knabe's Korner I hope everyone will enjoy a happy and safe Labor Day weekend. It is hard to believe that the summer is already over! It has also been a time of great reflection, as the city of Cerritos recognized the 25-year anniversary of the Cerritos air disaster. I was honored to participate in a ceremony on August 31st as I had been Mayor at the time of the crash. Twenty-five years ago, coming out of church, it was a typical, bright, sunny summer day. Within a few minutes, we would come to realize that it was a day that would forever change our community. For me as Mayor, it was a moment in time for which there was no book to instruct me on how to manage this crisis. It was also very personal for Julie and me, as we lost many friends and were close to many of the survivors. While we reflect on the pain and sadness, I am also so proud of how this community came together that day and in the days and months to come. We were blessed to live in a city that had the resources to respond quickly and effectively. We had fire and police personnel join with neighbors to rally together to support those most directly impacted. Importantly, we also had teams of mental health professionals on the scene, something that was unheard of then and is now a national model for crisis response. Across these 25 years, many of us have enjoyed births, marriages, graduations and the special times we share with family and friends. We remember those who did not get to enjoy 1
that blessing. And our thoughts and prayers go out to the surviving family members who continue to live the pain each and every day. We wrap our arms around them. May God bless you. Setting the Record Straight Republican Proposals by Matt Kauble Editor's note: The article below is an opinion that does not necessarily reflect the beliefs of the Cerritos Republican Club. We know what the Democrats are against, but what is the general vision and direction the GOP is headed and why is that good for the nation? The GOP is for middle class and working families. Currently, businesses and banks are not investing in anything other than moving to lower costing areas like Texas. By reducing taxes and regulatory compliance costs and penalties on our businesses, we free up funds for them to pay down debts and give them the confidence to hire more workers, give raises, buy new equipment, etc. This in turn spurs them and their employees to make more purchases and investments, which spurs even more economic growth. The GOP is generally for opening up areas closed off by law to oil and natural gas exploration to reduce fuel prices and our dependency on foreign energy sources; this in turn reduces transportation expenses for every product we rely on or want to buy. While the GOP does see a need for some regulation, we need to reduce the severity and number of regulatory burdens placed on all businesses. The California GOP has begun a charitable initiative to establish a new sort of social safety net through www.cagopcares.com. Such a program may reduce the need for government run social safety net programs by getting private individuals more invested in solving the problems in their surrounding communities. The GOP is for the workers having more control over what they earn and support. We believe free market principles in the workplace lead to workplaces that foster better morale and more freedom. This is why most Republican officials support open shop labor agreements, secret ballot elections in workplace environments, and giving workers more control over what gets deducted from their paychecks. The GOP is pro-immigrant. We want to solve the problems attached to illegal immigration; believing that if solved then communities that vote with us on the propositions will be more willing to vote for our candidates. That is why we are for a guest worker program that ensures Americans have the first crack at getting American jobs; we are for shutting down the illegal slave, drug and weapons trades crossing our borders by securing all of our borders; and we are for pressuring other nations to solve internal problems that send their citizens to our nation for a better life. The GOP has led in getting our nation to pay attention to the finances of our state and nation. The Republican controlled House of Representatives passed three budgets aimed at solving our debt problem, while stimulating our economy; all three died in the Democrat Senate. Republicans have put forward legislation that deals with the growing unfunded liabilities CalSTRS, CalPERS, Medicare, and Social Security face; they may not be perfect solutions but the Democrats belittle those plans, while not offering alternatives. The GOP does not say it is for protecting any specific group, because we don t see people as separate interests groups. We just see folks who need help and problems needing solutions. Republican Stand on Issues Courts - Republicans believe a judge's role is to interpret the law, not make law from the bench. Judges in our federal court system, from district courts to the Supreme Court, should demonstrate fidelity to the U. S. Constitution. We trust the judicial system to base rulings on the law, and nothing else. Republican National Committee The Citizens Redistricting Committee s Final Maps Analysis By Matt Kauble The Final Maps by the Citizen s Redistricting Committee were completed on August 15. One Commissioner dissented on approving each map, claiming that the Commission violated the Voting Rights Act (VRA) in several locations and used the vague term communities of interest to justify the lines drawn. The California Republican Party has launched a Referendum on the State Senate lines. Legal challenges may also come from Latino groups as fewer Latino VRA districts were produced than is current, despite Latinos (and Asians) as a percentage of both total population and of voters grew. Most pundits following this believe efforts to overturn these lines will fail. Regardless, a year round voter registration, precinct organizing, and volunteer training effort will be needed to give Republican candidates a chance at victory in our region. Otherwise, thanks to Prop 14, Republicans in some districts will be choosing between two Democrats in November, 2012. The facts AD57 Includes Hacienda Heights, La Mirada, Santa Fe Springs, South Whittier, Whittier, and most of Norwalk. Democrats hold a 48% to 29% registration advantage over Republicans. In 2008, Prop 8 got 58% of the vote, while John McCain got only 37%. Hispanics and Asians represent 57% and 12% of voters respectively. The Whittier Republican Women s Federated and the Santa Fe Springs based Southeast LA County Lincoln Club are the active Republican organizations in this district. AD58 Includes Artesia, Bell Gardens, Bellflower, Cerritos, Downey, Montebello, Pico Rivera, and southwestern Norwalk. Democrats hold a 54% to 23% registration advantage. In 2008, Prop 8 got 59% of the vote, while McCain 3
got only 28%. Hispanics and Asians represent 56% and 15% of voters respectively. The Cerritos Republican Club is the only active Republican club within this district. AD63 Includes Bell, Hawaiian Gardens, Lakewood, Lynwood, Paramount, South Gate, and part of north Long Beach. Democrats hold a 58% to 19% registration advantage. In 2008, Prop. 8 got 57% of the vote, while McCain got only 19%. Hispanics and Asians represent 58% and 7% of voters respectively. Lakewood is the only city with an active Republican presence. AD70 Includes Catalina Island, Signal Hill, almost all of Long Beach, and parts of San Pedro, Harbor City and Wilmington. Democrats hold a 49% to 25% registration advantage. In 2008, Prop 8 got 45% of the vote, while McCain got only 35%. Hispanics and Asians represent 24% and 11% of voters respectively. The Long Beach Republican Party, Long Beach Young Republicans, Long Beach Lincoln Club, Long Beach Republican Women s Federated and the new San Pedro Harbor Republicans are five active Republican organizations in this district. AD72 Includes Fountain Valley, Los Alamitos, Seal Beach, Westminster and part of Garden Grove. Republicans hold a 54% to 38% registration advantage. In 2008, Prop 8 got 59% of the vote, while McCain got only 53%. Hispanics and Asians represent 15% and 28% of voters respectively. Numerous Republican and/or conservative organizations are active within this district, including the Seal Beach based 605/405 Tea Party. State Senate Most of our club members live in three new State Senate districts. The facts SD32 Includes Artesia, Bellflower, Cerritos, Downey, Hacienda Heights, Hawaiian Gardens, La Mirada, Montebello, Norwalk, Pico Rivera, South Whittier, Whittier, part of Lakewood and most of Buena Park. Democrats hold a 49% to 28% registration advantage. In 2008, Prop 8 got 61% of the vote, while McCain got only 38% of the vote. Hispanics and Asians represent 50% and 15% of voters respectively. SD33 Includes Bell, Lynwood, Paramount, Signal Hill, South Gate, Vernon, and parts of Lakewood and most of Long Beach. Democrats hold a 58% to 18% registration advantage. In 2008, Prop 8 got 54% of the vote, while McCain got only 23%. Hispanics and Asians represent 51% and 8% of voters respectively. SD34 Includes Fountain Valley, Garden Grove, Los Alamitos, Santa Ana, Seal Beach, Westminster, and parts of Anaheim, Huntington Beach, and Long Beach. Democrats hold a 38.3% to 37.6% registration advantage. In 2008, Prop 8 got 59% of the vote, while McCain got only 47%. Hispanics and Asians represent 26% and 21% of voters respectively. Congress Most of our club members live in 2 new Congressional districts. The facts CD38 Includes Artesia, Cerritos, Hawaiian Gardens, La Mirada, La Palma, Montebello, Norwalk, Pico Rivera, South Whittier, Whittier, and parts of Bellflower and Lakewood. Democrats hold a 49% to 28% registration advantage. In 2008, Prop 8 got 61% of the vote, while McCain got only 38% of the vote. Hispanics and Asians represent 52% and 14% of voters respectively. Congresswomen Linda Sanchez and Grace Napolitano have residencies within this district, and State Senator Ron Calderon has declared he is running for this seat. CD47 Includes Catalina Island, Cypress, Los Alamitos, Rossmoor, Signal Hill, Stanton, Westminster, most of Garden Grove and Long Beach, and parts of Buena Park and Lakewood. Democrats hold a 43% to 32% registration advantage. In 2008, Prop 8 got 60% of the vote, while McCain got 50%. Hispanics and Asians represent 20% and 19% of voters respectively. Democrat State Senator Alan Lowenthal and Republican City Councilman Gary DeLong have already declared they are running for this seat. 4
