EU-LAC Health 2nd Roadmapping Workshop Madrid, 26-27 February 2014 SUMMARY OF THE FIRST DAY ERIKA SELA, INNOVATEC

International cooperation in the Directorate E- Health of the DG Research & Innovation (R- D Amario) The EC continues to foresee international cooperation in R&D&I as an important tool to tackle global societal challenges, and health is a global challenge. H2020 is open to participation of third countries (with some limitations) The topics identified by the EU LAC health research agenda could fit in a future workprogramme of the H2020!!

THE RELEVANCE OF INFRASTRUCTURES FOR RESEARCH COLLABORATION (EATRIS (G. migliaccio) and ECRIN (J. Demotes- Mainard). Two good examples of how Europe is providing a framework for sharing resources through the creation of distributed infrastructure for health resarch, ECRIN with the aim of facilitating for health research through the creation of distributed infrastructure supporting multinational clinical research in Europe EATRIS to support translational health research leading to clinical development of innovative preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic products.

THE EU-CELAC JOINT INNITIATIVE ON HEALTH RESEARCH: THE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AGENDA THE CROWN JEWEL OF THE EU LAC HEALTH PROJECT SO FAR

WHAT WE HAVE: - six priority areas for health research cooperation between the two regions. - Relevant issues in each priority area were future collaboration could be promoted - 3 specific topics identified and described, addressing important health issues affecting both regions and were there is added value for the collaboration -and important, we have the scientifics on board!

The scientific research agenda is an important and essential work for advancing in a EU-CELAC joint initiative on health research, AND WE HAVE IT. Our next task is to sell the topics to policy makers (SOM, ERANET-LAC, H2020,..)

PRESENT SCENARIO OF EU-CELAC POLICY DIALOGUE ON R&I JIRI, SOM, SOM wg, ALCUE NET, ERANET LAC, EULAC HEALTH, BILATs,

POLITICAL LEVEL Senior Official Meeting (SOM) to implement the Joint Innititaive for research and innovation (JIRI) SOM WORKING GROUPS Short term implementation mechanisms: ERA NET LAC Technical support EU LAC HEALTH ALCUENET WE ARE ALL IN THE SAME BOAT!!! under grant agreement n 281459.

HOW MUCH HAS EU LAC HEALTH PROGRESSED?? WE HAVE ACHIEVED A LOT OF WORK BUT.... WE STILL NEED TO WORK A LOT MORE TO ACHIEVE THE GOALS OF THE PROJECT THAT ARE: TO DEVELOP A ROADMAP FOR A SUSTAINABLE EU CELAC JOINT INITIATIVE ON HEALTH RESEARCH

AGENDA FOR DAY 2 THE STRATEGIC ACTION PLAN AND ROADMAP We need to prepare a document to convince policy makers that cooperation in health research between EU and CELAC regions: is important, is neccessary, is good value for money, is feasible, is realistic, is beneficial for both regions, is scientifically and socially justified.

And that the best way to sustain this cooperation is to establish some type of COORDINATING BODY to facilititate governance and the implementation of the research agenda.
