Commissioner Greenlaw has over 40 years of public safety and emergency management experience and was the first CALEA Commissioner to represent the growing Public Safety Communications Accreditation Program. Commissioner Greenlaw serves on the Commission s Executive Board as Secretary and chairperson for Agency Review Committee D. Publications and Magazines Upcoming Events CALEA Client Information Jobs CALEA Commissioner Mary Ann Viverette retired as Chief of Police for the city of Gaithersburg, Maryland on May 18, 2007. Mr. John A. King will replace her as Gaithersburg s Chief of Police. Commissioner Viverette began her law enforcement career in 1978 as a deputy with the Montgomery County (MD) Sheriff s Office before joining the Gaithersburg (MD) Police Department a year later. She was appointed to the position of Chief of Police in 1986 and under her leadership; the department was initially CALEA Accredited in 1993. Commissioner Viverette was appointed to the CALEA Board in May 2002 and is currently the chairperson of the Standards Review and Interpretation Committee and a member of Agency Review Committee D. Good luck to Commissioner Viverette and best wishes in her retirement. Staff News CALEA is pleased to announce the hiring of Ms. Lorena Singer as CALEA's Mexico Field Representative. Ms. Singer has 23 years of experience in the field of public safety and is a knowledgeable and experienced CALEA Assessor who has conducted many successful on-site assessments in the United States, as well as in Mexico. She will provide accreditation support to Mexican public safety agencies in Spanish and is available to answer questions and provide support by phone to Mexican agencies and CALEA Program Managers. She will also be available at CALEA Conferences to assist agencies with training. Her CALEA email address is lsinger@calea.org. Welcome aboard Lorena Singer! Recently CALEA staff members Linda Phillips, Dennis Hyater, and Stephen Mitchell achieved milestones with CALEA. May 2007 marks Information Technology Coordinator Linda L. Phillips 25 th year of service. Ms. Phillips joined CALEA in 1982 as a secretary after working for the Department of Army. Currently, she manages CALEA s computer operations and data processing and provides technical support for the CALEA Accreditation Compliance Express (CACE) Program. She enjoys reading a good book, stamping her own greeting cards, and relaxing at her beach cottage on the Outer Banks in North Carolina.
Program Manager Dennis M. Hyater celebrated his 15 th year of service. Mr. Hyater was hired in 1992, after serving 28 years with the Metropolitan Police Department, in Washington DC. He has worn many hats since joining CALEA including: conference training coordinator; instructor for new and refresher assessor training, accreditation manager training, and introduction to the CALEA Process; SRIC Coordinator; and staff liaison for Agency Review Committee C and Awards Committee, as well as providing assistance to client agencies with interpretations of the CALEA Standards and Process. In his spare time, he enjoys golf and carpentry. Program Manager Stephen W. Mitchell also celebrated his 15 th year with CALEA. He has been with CALEA since May 1992, following his retirement from the City of Fairfax, Virginia Police Department with the rank of lieutenant. As a Program Manager, Mr. Mitchell provides technical assistance to agencies in the CALEA Accreditation Process, teaches New Accreditation Manager and Reaccreditation Management Training, and coordinates the Commission s Outreach Committee and Agency Review Committee B at CALEA Conferences. During his leisure time, he likes to fish and explore the outdoors. CALEA thanks and congratulations these Staff Members on their achievement! CALEA Agency News Colonel James W. Johnson was named the new Police Chief in Baltimore County, Maryland. Baltimore County Police Department has been CALEA Accredited since November 1984. The new Chief of Police for Culpeper (Virginia) Police Department is Mr. Scott Barlow. Culpeper Police Department has been CALEA Accredited since March 2005. Mr. Klay Peterson is the new Chief of Police for the University of South Carolina Upstate Police Department. The University Police Department is currently in the initial self-assessment phase of the CALEA Recognition Program. Frausto of the Arizona State University Police Department is the new President for the Arizona Police Accreditation Coalition (AZPAC). Sergeant Donald Jones of the Lemont (IL) Police Department is the new Illinois Police Accreditation Coalition (IPAC) President. The CALEA Conference in Montreal, Quebec (July 25-28, 2007) is registered as an official event by Canada s Border Services Agency. As a registered Canadian Event, conference attendees may be eligible for a rebate of the goods and service tax (GST) and the harmonized sales tax (HST), for further information visit the CRA website. To assist attendees travel to and from Montreal, the Border Services Agency suggests conference attendees carry a copy of the Border to Show letter as proof the conference is an officially Canadian registered meeting. Upcoming Events The Community Development Corporation, in conjunction with the Genesis Organization, will hold a community awareness meeting on ways and means a community may enhance its capacity to effectively address the perception and/or reality of crime/safety. The topic of review will be CALEA. CALEA Program Manager Christie Goddard will be present to answer questions concerning CALEA Process and Programs. The date of the event is Tuesday, June 19, 2007, 5:00 PM at the Austintown Fitch High School, 4560 Falcon Drive, Austintown, Ohio, 44515. Executive Director Sylvester Daughtry and Program Managers Christie Goddard and Maya Mitchell will be in attendance for the 2007 National Sheriffs Association 2007 Annual Conference and Exhibition, June 23-27, 2007, in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Program Managers will be on hand in the Exhibition Hall (Booth Number 603), to answer questions about CALEA and the Accreditation Process. Executive Director Daughtry will participate in honoring this year's NSA Triple Crown Award recipients during the conference s General Session II. The Triple Crown Award tributes agencies that have achieved accreditation from CALEA, the American Correctional Association, and the National Commission on Correctional Health Care. On Tuesday, June 26th at 3:00 pm, CALEA will moderate a panel discussion titled CALEA Accreditation from a Sheriff's Perspective. Panel participants will be prominent sheriffs from CALEA Accredited Agencies and audience members will have the opportunity to ask the panel questions about the CALEA Accreditation Process. CALEA Client Information CALEA PROCESS AND PROGRAMS GUIDE Published in January 2007, the new CALEA Process and Programs Guide (CPPG) is the instructional manual for CALEA s credentialing programs, no matter what edition of the CALEA Standards an agency is using. CPPG replaces, in their entirety, the Accreditation Process Book (1995), the Self-Assessment Manual (1996), and the Assessor Manual (1997) for all CALEA Programs. CPPG can be purchase through the CALEA Online Store. The price is $40.00 per manual, plus shipping and handling.
CACE NEWS The 2 nd Edition upgrade to the CALEA Accreditation Compliance Express- Communications (CACE-C) is in the final stages of development and will be available to agencies under a current CACE-C Service Agreement. The Launch Date is set for June 15, 2007. CALEA will send agency designated CACE Managers instructions on where and how to download the upgrade. Please note: agencies in the Communications Accreditation Program should wait until the agency is ready to convert to 2nd edition communications standards before downloading this update. Contact your CALEA Program Manager, if you are unsure when the 2nd edition standards conversion should occur. Coming in July CACE 2.0!
