Annex I - Country and area nomenclature, regional and other groupings The Statistical Yearbook lists countries or areas based on the United Nations Standard Country Codes (Series M, No. 49), prepared by the Statistics Division of the United Nations Secretariat and first issued in 1970 1. The list of countries or areas; the composition of geographical regions and economic, trade and other groupings used within this yearbook (as at 31 December 2012) are presented in this Annex. The names of countries or areas refer to their short form used in day-to-day operations of the United Nations and not necessarily to their official name as used in formal documents 2. As an aid to statistical data processing, a unique standard threedigit numerical code is assigned to each country or area and to each geographical region and grouping of countries or areas. For reference, these codes, where applicable, are presented to the left of each country or area listed in this Annex. These codes range from 000 to 899, inclusive. A. Changes in country or area names (since 31 August 1999) The geographical extent of a country or area, or the composition of a geographical region, may change over time and users should take such changes into account in interpreting the tables in this Yearbook. A change in the name of a country or area while its geographical coverage remains the same is not usually accompanied by a change in its numerical code. Changes in numerical codes and names in the general period covered by the statistics (since 31 August 1999) in the Yearbook, are shown below; Numerical code Country or area (added or changed) Date of change Numerical code Country or area (Name changes with no change in code) Date of change 728 South Sudan 2011 132 Cabo Verde, previously Cape Verde 2013 729 Sudan 2011 275 State of Palestine, previously Occupied 2013 531 Curaçao 2010 Palestinian Territory 534 Sint Maarten (Dutch part) 2010 434 Libya, previously Libyan Arab Jamahiriya 2011 535 Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba 2010 068 Bolivia (Plurinational State of), previously 2009 652 Saint Barthélemy 2007 Bolivia 663 Saint Martin (French part) 2007 498 Republic of Moldova, previously Moldova 2008 499 Montenegro 2006 (since 2007) 688 Serbia 2006 862 Venezuela (Bolivarian Republic of), 2006 034 Southern Asia 3 2005 previously Venezuela 143 Central Asia 3 2005 891 Serbia and Montenegro previously 2003 831 Guernsey 2005 Yugoslavia 832 Jersey 2005 626 Timor-Leste, previously East Timor 2002 248 Åland Islands 2003 446 China, Macao Special Administrative 2000 175 Mayotte 2002 Region, previously Macau B. Regional groupings The scheme of regional groupings given below presents 7 regions based mainly on continents; 5 of the 7 continental regions are further subdivided into 22 regions that are so drawn as to obtain greater homogeneity in sizes of population, demographic circumstances and accuracy of demographic statistics. This nomenclature is widely used in international statistics and is followed to the greatest extent possible in the present Yearbook in order to promote consistency and facilitate comparability and analysis. However, it is by no means universal in international statistical compilation, even at the level of continental regions, and variations in international statistical sources and methods dictate many unavoidable differences in particular fields in the present Yearbook. General differences are indicated in the footnotes to the classification presented below. More detailed differences are given in the footnotes and technical notes to individual tables. Neither is there international standardization in the use of the terms developed and developing countries, areas or regions. These terms are used in the present publication to refer to regional groupings generally considered as developed : these are Northern America (numerical code 021), Europe (150), Japan (392) and Australia and New Zealand (053). These designations are intended for statistical convenience and do not necessarily express a judgement about the stage reached by a particular country or area in the development process. Differences from this usage are indicated in the notes to individual tables. 1 Four revisions of this document were published in 1975, 1982, 1996 and 1999 (ST/ESA/STAT/SER.M/49/Rev.4). Further revisions are now published on the United Nations Statistics Division website under the M49 section. 2 A listing in the 6 official languages of the United Nations is contained in Terminology Bulletin No. 347/Rev.1 or the UNTERM website, prepared by the Department of General Assembly Affairs and Conference Services of the United Nations Secretariat. 3 Formerly part of South-Central Asia (numerical code 062).
