Tree & Pollinator Planting Food Tree Project Bee City USA - Asheville The GreenWorks Food Tree Project establishes community orchards on public land throughout Asheville and Buncombe County. To date, GreenWorks has organized community members and volunteers to plant six community orchards filled with fruit trees, berry bushes and pollinators. These orchards provide a source of locally-grown, fresh, healthy produce to communities, especially those that lack easy access to grocery stores. GreenWorks employs Tree Keepers individuals from the immediate community who receive training in tree maintenance to care for the orchards during the growing season. Asheville became the first ever Bee City USA in 2012. In 2016, Bee City USA founder Phyllis Stiles, handed over the reins for the Asheville chapter to GreenWorks so she could focus on the growing national network. Under GreenWorks leadership, Asheville continues to deepen its commitment to being a model city for supporting pollinator-friendly habitat. GreenWorks helps schools establish pollinator gardens, encourages the planting of native species that attract pollinators and coordinates Pollination Celebration Week in June each year. Sponsor pollinator planting projects at local schools for $2,500 Sponsor a Community Orchard for $10,000 or a TreeKeeper position for $5,000 www.ashevillegreenworks.org 9
Education Programs Waste Reduction & Recycling Since the beginning, GreenWorks has focused on waste reduction education, making sure generations of children learn the basics of living lightly on the earth. Our educators teach the 3 R s Reduce, Reuse and Recycle - through handson activities, lessons and field trips to the landfill, recycling center and composting facility. Allie Green, shown at the left, visits schools to teach students and teachers about composting lunchroom and classroom food waste at their schools. Lunchroom composting programs in Asheville have helped reduce school trash from eight bags to a single bag each day! Sponsor Waste Reduction & Recycling Education for $500 Trees & Urban Forestry Initiated in 2015, GreenWorks is developing urban forestry curriculum that introduces children to tree identification and explains the important social, ecological, economic and health benefits of trees in the urban landscape. Tree Detective Kits are available in libraries and schools for self-directed, hands-on learning about local forests. As the coordinator of Bee City USA Asheville, GreenWorks is developing the Pollination Exploration Backpack. The backpack guides students in investigating pollinators in their natural habitats and understanding the importance of pollinators in our daily lives. Sponsor a Tree Detective or Pollination Exploration Backpack for $500 www.ashevillegreenworks.org 10

Other Contributions In-Kind Donations Performing more than 200 projects each year takes a toll on our equipment and gear. We are always appreciative of donations of items such as canoes, paddles, kayaks, shovels, vehicles, trees, perennials, mulch and compost. Professionals can also donate their services, either to help with organizational functions or as a silent auction item. Our special events that feature a raffle or silent auction are great venues for showcasing donated items such as artwork, jewelry, hotel packages, recreational packages, equipment and dining experiences. Company Fundraisers A great way to increase your sales and grow your customer base is to partner with GreenWorks on a special company fundraiser. The most common type of company fundraiser is to dedicate a percentage of sales from a day, weekend or month to GreenWorks. Businesses also hold races, sold a special item such as a t-shirt and even put on an entire event, donating the proceeds to GreenWorks. We love company fundraisers because they not only raise money, they increase awareness about GreenWorks among a whole new community of people. Corporate Grant Programs GreenWorks has partnered with businesses, including DoubleTree by Hilton Asheville, Biltmore and Diamond Brand Outdoors, to apply for grants that would otherwise be inaccessible to our organization. As a result, a Hilton Travel with a Purpose grant enabled us to enhance the Deaverview Community Orchard and the Columbia/ Grassroots Outdoors Alliance Belay Grant is helping to support our Youth Environmental Leadership Program. Corporate grants are a great way to raise the national profile in your industry and provide support for projects in the Asheville-Buncombe community. Employee Matching Programs Employee matching gifts are donations an employer makes to match its employees charitable contributions. These gifts often are dollar-for-dollar, but some companies will give double or even triple the original donation. Some may also give matching gifts for employees volunteer efforts. Check with your company to see if it provides employee matching donations and consider listing GreenWorks as your charity of choice. www.ashevillegreenworks.org 13
