Nationalist Party (Pro-Democracy) led by Chiang Kai-Shek & supported by U.S. VS. Communist Party led by Mao Zedong supported by Soviet Union.

1949: Communists took control through violent revolution & create the People s Republic of China.

In the margin of your Communism in China Matrix, draw a circle. In that circle, write ONE statement that summarizes how Communists came to control China. Be prepared to share your circle summaries!

Many Chinese were imprisoned in forced labor camps or killed.

Born: 1893 Died: 9/9/1976 Was a teacher, who studied Karl Marx s communist theory.

More concerned with the plight of the Chinese peasants than Chinese urban workers. Felt the working class was doing all the work & remained poor while the rich were getting richer.

In the margin of your Communism in China Matrix, create a biographical book title describing the impact of Mao Zedong on China. Be prepared to share your book title!

1958 Help China become equal to West in agricultural & industrial production.

Built factories to strengthen the country after decades of war. Forced people to work collective farms where they shared everything.

Plan failed miserably! Known as Great Leap Backward Chinese had little reason to work hard.

Crop failures in 1950s = famine 45+ million died Produced weak steel! 1960-program ended, reducing Mao s power!

If the following statement is TRUE, STAND UP! If the following statement is FALSE, SIT DOWN! In the 1950s, the communist government of China began a policy called The Great Leap Forward in order to increase production in farms and factories.

Daily Journal ## 3 Journal Title: Photo Analysis Date: March 4, 2015 As you view this photograph, what words come to your mind? What do you think this man was hoping to accomplish by his actions? Make sure your responses are in COMPLETE SENTENCES!

China s 600 million people have two remarkable peculiarities; they are, first of all poor, and secondly blank. That may seem like a bad thing, but it is really a good thing. Poor people want change, want to do things, want revolution. A clean sheet of paper has no blotches, and so the newest and most beautiful pictures can be painted on it. --- Mao Zedong, 1958

1966: Wished to regain power lost with Great Leap Forward & create classless & equal society Created The Red Guard: 11 million Chinese youth

Goals: Wipe out Chinese customs & ideas. Promote Mao s teachings Eliminate anyone who disagreed with Mao.

Red Guard attacked people in positions of power who publicly disagreed with Mao. Imprisoned in labor camps.

The Little Red Book also known as Quotations from Chairman Mao Zedong ( 毛主席语录 ) has been published by the government of the People s Republic of China since 1964. It is a collection of quotations excerpted from Mao Zedong's past speeches and publications. 900 million copies of The Little Red Book has been sold, second only to the bible which has been around much longer. It was essentially an unofficial requirement for every Chinese citizen to own, to read, and to carry it at all times during the Cultural Revolution. The punishment for failing to produce the book upon being asked would range from being beaten by Red Guards to being given years of hard-labor imprisonment. Studying the book was required in schools, as well as at workplaces. Workplaces have specified reading sessions during working hours for workers to study the book.

Program also failed! 1976 THIS PROGRAM ENDED when Mao died. Millions died Cultural & educational elements had been destroyed!

If the following statement is TRUE, THUMBS UP! If the following statement is FALSE, THUMBS DOWN! Artists, teachers, and writers became highly revered in Chinese society during the Cultural Revolution implemented by Communist leader Mao Zedong.

1976: Deng Xiaoping became leader until his death in 1997. For the 1st time opened China up to the West. Slide 32

1989-Communism was not popular around world. Over 10,000 students protested corrupt government & called for democracy. Xiaoping ordered thousands of soldiers to end the protest in Beijing. June 4, 1989-soldiers fired on students, arrested thousands of people, destroyed Goddess of Democracy statue.

The Tiananmen Square Protest

In the margin of your Communism in China Matrix, create a news headline describing the event at Tiananmen Square in 1989.. Be prepared to share your headlines!
