The Program of Count Cavour, 1846: The history of every age proves that no people can attain a high degree of intelligence and morality unless its feeling of nationality is strongly developed. This noteworthy fact is an expected result of the laws that rule human nature....therefore, if we so desire the unification of Italy--it is not only that we may see our country glorious and powerful but that above all we may elevate her in intelligence and moral development up to the plane of the most civilized nations....this union we preach is not so difficult to obtain Nationalism has become general; it grows daily; and it has already grown strong enough to keep all parts of Italy united despite the differences among them. 1.) According to Cavour, how can people achieve a degree of intelligence and morality? 2.) According to Cavour, what would be a positive result of Italian unification? 3.) What are Cavour s thoughts on Nationalism? 4.) Why do you think that Cavour was called the Brains of? 5.) Provide related outside information?

We passionately wish to free Italy from foreign rule. We agree that we must put aside all petty differences in order to gain this most important goal. We wish to drive out the foreigners not only because we want to see our country powerful and glorious, but also because we want to elevate the Italian people in intelligence and moral development. Count Camillo di Cavour, 1810 1861 1.) What action did Cavour recommend in this excerpt? 2.) Why do you believe that a passage such as this would spark nationalism among the people of Italy? 3.) Provide related outside information?

Garibaldi describes his Red Shirts O noble Thousand!... I love to remember you! Where any of our brothers are fighting for liberty, there all Italians must hurry! Such was your motto. Let him who loves his country in his heart, and not with his lips only, follow me. Giuseppe Garibaldi 1.) According to this document, what was Garibaldi attempting to accomplish in this speech? 2.) Why do you think that Garibaldi was called the Sword of? 3.) Provide related outside information?

Speech of Vittorio Emanuele I, King of Italy, 1861: Free, and nearly entirely united, the opinion of civilized nations is favorable to us; the just and liberal principles, now prevailing in the councils of Europe, are favorable to us. Italy herself, too, will become a guarantee of order and peace, and will once more be a successful instrument of universal civilization....these facts have inspired the nation with great confidence in its own destinies. I take pleasure in manifesting to the first Parliament of Italy the joy I feel in my heart as king and soldier. Right Leg in the Boot at Last Giuseppe Garibaldi and the King of Italy 1.) According to the document, how does King Emanuele I feel about Italy and being the King? 2.) In your own words, what does the statement Right Leg in the Boot at Last mean? 3.) Excerpts from "General Instructions for the Members of Young Italy" Young Italy is a brotherhood of Italians who believe in a law of Progress and Duty, and are convinced that Italy is destined to become one nation convinced also that she possesses sufficient strength within herself to become one, and that the ill success of her former efforts is to be attributed not to the weakness, but to the misdirection of the revolutionary elements within her that the secret of force lies in constancy and unity of effort. They join this association in the firm intent of remembering both thought and action to the great aim of reconstituting Italy as one independent sovereign nation of free men and equals... Young Italy is Republican and Unitarian. Giuseppe Mazzini, "General Instructions for the Members of Young Italy" (1831) 1.) According to Mazzini, what is the main goal of Young Italy? 2.) According to Mazzini, what will it take to unite Italy? 3.) Based on this document, why do you think Mazzini was called the Motivator? 4.) Provide related outside information?

From Chapter 23 World History: Connections to Today 1.) What symbols of Italian nationalism appear in the painting? 2.) How does the painting show that Garibaldi used military tactics to help unify Italy? 3.) Does the painting portray Garibaldi as a successful leader? If so, how? 4.) Provide related outside information?
