2 The Society Annual Meeting of the Arizona SAR was called to order by Arizona SAR President Steven Monez at 9.30 AM The Arizona SAR Color Guard presented the colors, led by State Color Guard Commander Matt Scott. Pledge of Allegiance was led by Thomas Sorensen Compliance Officer, SAR Pledge and American Creed was led by David Swanson, Society Historian. Invocation was given by J. Michael Jones. The color guard posted the colors and retired. Introduction of honored by Steve Monez recognizing: Gary Pettett, Vice President General Intermountain District Stephen J. Miller AZ National Trustee Rudy Byrd III AZ Alternate National Trustee Ana Monez Arizona State Society First Lady Secretary Dr. William Baran reported there was a quorum present, with 19 voting delegates (see Doc 2 voting delegates sign in). Welcome remarks were given by President Monez. The Ladies adjourned to the Ladies Auxiliary Meeting conducted by Helen Seaton. Minutes of Nov 12 th 2017 meeting were placed on the table and distributed to all members by Constant Contact and placed on our web site for comments. Minor additions were made. Minutes were approved as corrected. (See Doc 3) Treasurers Report by Richard Burke, Treasurer.(see DOC 4) The President asked the Secretary to summarize reports received and not those that were not reported. Secretary reported receiving and publishing all reports except: Rim Country SAR Chapter was absent to meet and elect officers for 2018. Brochure Contest update was present on the Americanism Report by Allen Nash No new information for the Constitution and Bylaws Report by Tom Sorensen A verbal report was made by Robert Sjolin on the Veteran Committee. All other reports were accepted as presented.
3 A special thanks for all the early reports that allowed the members to read them prior to the meeting. The meeting ran very fast as a result of prior reading and we are reducing the number of written reports on the table. Next meeting only bring 10. Unfinished Business: Color Guard Bylaw Change: A motion was made at the last meeting by Thomas Sorensen and seconded by Richard Burke to table the proposed change until the next meeting and Motion Passed. The written proposal was distributed to all members for review. The proposed bylaw change was amended to remove the he in the last sentence to read; The Society President shall appoint the Color Guard Commander and shall conduct a Change of Command Ceremony at the Annual SOCIETY meeting. The bylaw motion passed. (See Doc 5) Note: There was an amendment written by David Swanson and it was withdrawn. Insurance for the AZ SAR Board, Officers and Color Guard was discussed by Steve Miller. He suggests that a Committee be assigned to address the details. A discussion presented the feelings of color guard members that the Arizona Society should not support the proposed regulations for use of muskets. Other members expressed the feeling that insurance coverage might encourage lawsuits. To date no issues have been reported on use of muskets. US Flag Desecration David Swanson presented a proposal to support the passage of the Flag Protection Amendment by supporting the Citizens Flag Alliance. Proposal passed 24 to 10 (Doc 6) The American Creed David Swanson presented a proposal to that the American Creed be recited during the opening ceremonies at all future Arizona SAR Annual and BOM meetings. The motion passed (doc 7)
5 Princeton Battlefield Project The project is still active as the sellers asked for an extension of the closing date to Feb. 28 th. An update will be given at the leadership meeting March 1-4. Nomination of 2018 Officers Stephen Miller presented the list of officers for 2018. President Monez asked for any nominations from the floor. There were none. Request for a Corresponding Secretary candidate was asked for with no volunteers. Bill Baran described what the job would entail. New Business: Election of new officers The membership voted unanimously to accept the recommended 2018 officers. Recommend additional $250/yr for total $500.00/yr tocar budget Proposal to add $250.00 to the already approved $250.00 for $500.00/annually to the Arizona State CAR. Passed 11Y 8N SOP Manual and Succession plan Presented by Jim Skaggs with examples of documents. New Prospective Member SAR Application Process Presented and discussed by Registrar George Stickney. It is in beta testing. American History Teacher Winner/Award William R. Aurand, Committee Chair, Allen Nash Saguaro Chapter President William Aurand requested a check for the AZ History Teacher Contest Award (C. Raso) of $250.00. Dr. Rudy Byrd seconded the request. Motion passed (Doc 8) Eagle Scout Winner/Award Ed Koeneman, Committee Chair Requested a check for the AZ State Eagle Scout winner Lucas Severinghaus from Prescott Chapter of $250 be approved. Motion Passed. Other business from the floor Mike Fisch updated the group on the Facebook changes. We have 67 members on facebook. Dr Byrd mentioned Congress and the importance of having our full 12 delegates attend to support the President General election. Mentioned that dual members may want to get their credentials from their primary State delegation. ROTC/JROTC Committee Chair Col. Ed Boyd discussed the rejected proposal to have every state submit two candidates for the National Award. More people would be reviewed and participate. Also the Sea Scouts groups are not recognized as ROTC units and this
6 needs to be corrected.
