Region 2 Affiliate Liaison - Dann Holmes Region 2 Affiliate Report ASPE Eastern Region 2 Road Trip I am fortunate, and thankful for my position at NSF International and as your ASPE Region 2 Affiliate Liaison. Often, I am asked by industry organizations, regulators and engineering firms to present on water related issues. A recent road trip focusing on Building Water Health took me to Cleveland and Uniontown, OH; as well as Johnstown and Butler, PA. It was an honor to present to three engineering firms, two of whom have ASPE Board of Directors members on their staff, and the third has an ASPE Chapter President on theirs. Each presentation started out thanking the engineering firms for their tireless commitment to ASPE. While driving from Uniontown, OH to Johnstown, PA to present to a biennial ASPE/ASHRAE joint meeting, I noticed road signs leading to the Flight 93 National Memorial. This memorial is dedicated to a heroic group of ordinary citizens making the ultimate sacrifice like no one group had ever done before them, or since. I didn t realize I was so close to such an important piece of American history. and witnesses on the scene of the devastating crash site. He really does not offer to talk about the event nor give much details to what he saw other than it was a very devastating and gruesome site of scattered ruins across the farmers' field. As we mentioned [in our talks] the [Johnstown, PA] area has many unique stories and attachments to historical events from moonshining to maple syrup, coal mining to steel mills, Tarzan (Johnny Weissmuller) to Rock-N-Roll (Allan Freed) and memorial sites of devastating events of three major floods and the crash site of Flight 93. In light of the tragic events of 911 it renewed the spirit of patriotism in the community and country. My Dad, Al Kormanik, a US Navy Veteran and retired/disabled union Plumber Pipefitter of 50 years, had developed a hobby constructing flagpoles from discarded steel piping he would salvage from various local contractors and job sites. The renewed patriotic interest elevated the request for flagpoles throughout the area and word spread quickly of his sturdy design and installation. Dad was very proud, creative and talented in building, fixing and constructing things. From building several houses, restoring old Mustangs and Camaros, plastering, masonry work and of course plumbing, he taught me and my two brothers to do everything. Prior to my dad's passing two years ago, he constructed over 200 flagpoles that can be found in 5 different PA counties as well as in Ohio and Maryland. They actually did a newspaper story on Dad's accomplishments. My Dad also loved his community of Windber, constructing and donating several flag poles to the school district athletic fields, VFW memorials and Club, local ethnic clubs and community parks. While speaking with hosts Michael Spinelli, CPD; James Spinelli, CPD, and Steve Kormanick, CPD during dinner and after the meeting, I mentioned how I wished I could have planned my time better. I could have paid my respects to those lost during UA Flight 93. I was surprised to learn so much from talking to our long-serving, dedicated Johnstown, PA Chapter board members and H.F. Lenz Co employees just how much they have invested into this area and memorial. We Have So Much to Be Thankful For In his own words, ASPE Johnstown Chapter President Steve Kormanick, CPD gives us an account of that day and shared some photos of those events. I can briefly tell you what I know and how my family became personally involved and engaged in the tragic event of Flight 93. My Cousin Tom Kormanik, recently retired, was a Deputy Sheriff for Somerset County and resides just minutes away from the crash site. Tom happen to be home as the reports of 911 were coming through as many local residents witnessed the sounds and visual impact of the tragic crash of Flight 93 nearby. Tom quickly reacted and became one of the very first responders Pictured: Steve Kormanik (left) and his brother Ron Recently we were given the opportunity to assist the local Windber School District with a major renovation of the 1949 Windber Stadium which Dad had donated and installed a flag pole. It was lost in the demolition and the (Continued on page 6) 4

(Continued from page 4) and steel mills once thrived and tragedy of several major historic floods devastated the area. It should be pointed out how much the H.F. Lenz Co. and our ASPE colleagues were involved in the plumbing design of the Flight 93 National Memorial. The next time I m in the area, I will make special time to visit this historic site. I hope you will too. My brother Ron and I agreed to take on the project of constructing three new flag poles in memory of Dad. The project grew with the expanded involvement of the VFW, school district and others. The Flag Pole project grew into a Patriotic Memorial Plaza where we developed and constructed patriotic memorials in memory of my dad and another Windber alumni James Crew who remains a MIA POW for which the original track was commemorated in his honor. There is a lot of history, traditions, memorials and stories embedded throughout the Laurel Mountain Communities of Western Pennsylvania where coal mines 6
