Common Corrections from DBQ #2 { What can I do to make my DBQ writing be>er for the 2nd DBQ test?

Writing is a never- ending evolving process DO NOT take any of the constructive comments personally we want to make your writing be>er REWRITE, REWRITE, REWRITE!!!! (We understand that there was a time limit) Evaluate your plan / start planning for the next DBQ exercise Public Disclaimer

Be>er use of citations in your work Be>er essay structure / format Introduction, transition, thesis, subpoints Meat of the essay Big Picture conclusion Development of deeper thought / connections Be>er explanations as to your points & why certain documents were picked / quoted Positive Signs of Growth

Limited development w/ the intro paragraph Intro Transition Thesis Statement / Subpoint(s) Great amount of historical interpretation with the docs w/ explanations Limited development w/ the concluding paragraph Restate thesis / subpoints Deeper historical perspective w/ examples Item #2 There s the Beef!!!

Example- During the 1600 s, a civil war broke out in England that pi>ed two sides against each other the Roundheads (led by Oliver Cromwell) and the Cavaliers (led by King Charles I). Both sides were influenced by the Enlightenment philosophers of Thomas Hobbes and John Locke with the Roundheads siding one way and the Cavaliers siding another. Item #1 Thesis / Subpoints

Example- During the 1600 s, a civil war broke out in England that pi<ed two sides against each other the Roundheads, led by Oliver Cromwell, and the Cavaliers, led by King Charles I. While questions of power, money, and political influence dominated the discussion, the philosophies of the Enlightenment had an underlying influence on both sides of the conflict, particularly the ideas of John Locke and Thomas Hobbes. In the case of the English Civil War, the documents of the period show how the conflicting political ideas of Hobbes and Locke concerning absolute monarchs directly influenced both sides of this conflict with the Roundheads siding with Locke s theories and the Cavaliers siding with Hobbes. Item #1 Thesis / Subpoints

Straight Option Thesis Option #1 Hobbes = Cavaliers Locke = Roundheads Historical Evidence Twisted Option Thesis Option #2 Hobbes = Cavaliers / Oliver Cromwell Locke = Roundheads (in principle, but not in practice) Historical Evidence Thesis Options in DBQ #2

Example- In conclusion, the ideas of Locke and Hobbes were reflected in the actions of both the Cavaliers and the Roundheads during the English Civil War. Such examples helped to influence future revolutions in Latin America, France, and the United States and continue to influence us today. Item #4 Big Picture Conclusions

Big Picture Topics- Immediate effect of the Civil War (Britain as a Republic) New World Migration (Puritans, Irish, etc.) The Revolution effect (L.A., Haiti, France, US, etc.) The revolutions themselves Changing thoughts of politics Changing thoughts of society History repeating (Haiti, France, etc.) Issues left unresolved (Revolutions of the 1820 s / 1830 s, Industrial Reformers / Marxism, problems in the 20 th Century, etc.) TAKE A CALCULATED ACADEMIC RISK!!!! Item #4 Big Picture Conclusions

Capitalization (Names, historical periods, countries, etc.) Watch fragments / run- ons Could more docs be used? (Rewriting) Map out ideas before writing 10-15 minutes = review & plan 45-1 hour minutes = write Other Suggestions

Major Points- DBQ #3 will be a timed, AP- style exam that will revolve around the creation of DBQ essay on a predetermined question One (1) Block ONLY Question & docs will be revealed on the day of exam You will be allowed to have your essay breakdowns with you for this exam DATE = 1/8/13 (Rewrites played by ear) (Topic will most likely involve Karl Marx / his philosophies) Final DBQ Exercise = DBQ #3
