History Ideology and principles Tea Party American Muslim Republicans

Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country -John F. Kennedy January 20, 1961

You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves. -Abraham Lincoln 16 th President 1961-1965

You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot help the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by encouraging class hatred. You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn. You cannot build character and courage by taking away man s initiative and independence. You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves. -Abraham Lincoln 16 th President 1961-1965

1820: The Missouri Compromise divided the country between the pro-slavery (Agrarian South) and antislavery (Industrial North). There was peace for three decades 1854: Introduction of the Kansas-Nebraska act shattered the peace of the Missouri compromise and allowed the expansion of slavery into western territories Anti-slavery leaders (former members of the Democratic party) joined forces to oppose the spread of slavery into the western territories This split the democrats. A new Party was needed.

Early 1854: The first informal meeting of the anti slavery leaders was held in a school house in Ripon, Wisconsin where the name Republican was suggested July, 1854: The first state wide meeting held in Jackson, MI of 10,000 people. The name Republican was formally adopted 1854: 44 republicans were elected to Congress and several were elected to the Senate

Feb, 1856: The first national convention was held in Pittsburgh Summer of 1856: The party held its first nomination convention in Philadelphia, announcing the birth of the Republican Party as a unified political force 1856: The first Republican presidential candidate, John C. Fremont 1858: They won control of Congress for the first time 1860: The first Republican president, Abraham Lincoln. The 16 th President of the U.S.

Smaller Government Government should only intervene where the individual is incapable of helping him/herself. Believe that all answers lay with the people rather than with the government.

A government big enough to supply you with everything you need, is a government big enough to take away everything that you have. - Gerald R. Ford (1913-2006) 38th U.S. President

Capitalism and Free Enterprise Pro-business and pro-personal responsibility Encourages the people, particularly the youth, to be more independent with their skills or talents rather than being dependent on their families or society in general

Fiscal Responsibility Less taxes for EVERYONEONE, rich or poor

There are two ways to conquer and enslave a nation. One is by the sword. The other is by debt. - John Adams 1826 2 nd U.S. President

Pro-military, increase military budget Oppose gun control laws Consider Death Penalty as necessary to curb crime Tend to be pro-life. Abortion should not be legal Believe that marriage should be between people of opposite sex and hence do not encourage gay rights as such

Libertarians Neoconservative Moderate Fiscal Conservative Social Conservative

Amendments The Republicans passed The 13 th Amendment, which outlawed slavery The 14 th Amendment, which guaranteed equal protection under the law The 15 th Amendment, which helped secure voting rights for African-Americans The 19 th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote

It dates back to a cartoon by legendary political cartoonist Thomas Nast, who in an 1874 issue of Harper's Weekly, depicted the Democrats as a donkey trying to scare a Republican Elephant. Nast chose the elephant because it was believed that elephants were clever, steadfast, and easily controlled, but unmanageable when frightened. Currently, Strong and Dignified

1908, when the Washington Post printed a special supplement in which Republican states were colored red and Democratic blue. In later years both parties strove to claim blue (as in true blue Americans ) and avoid red, with its connotations of radicalism.

1976, the TV networks agreed to a formula to avoid any implication of favoritism in color selections. The color of the incumbent party, initially set as blue for Gerald Ford s Republican ticket in that year, would flip every four years. 1992, Clinton was red on the maps, was red again as an incumbent in 1996, Challenger Bush, red in 2000 and was red again as an incumbent in 2004.

Seats in the Senate 47 / 100 Seats in the House 242 / 435 Governorships 29 / 50 Chair of Governors Association Bob McDonnell(VA) Chairman: Reince Priebus (WI) Senate Leader: Mitch McConnell, Minority leader, (KY) Jon Kyl, Minority Whip (AZ) House Leader: John Boehner, Speaker (OH) Eric Cantor, Majority leader (VA) Kevin McCarthy, Majority Whip (CA)

Not a political party, it is a Movement The term T-Party or Tea Party has reference to the 1773 Boston Tea Party, a protest that the colonists raised against the British tax on tea 2009: Tea Party gained popularity to protest massive government spending, bailouts & laws like the Health Care Reform, American Recovery and Reinvestment Act

Fiscal responsibility Limited government Free market Gadsden flag

What do Republicans and American Muslims have in common? Both are conservative Pro family values Pro life Pro business

American Muslims are not party loyalists. They are the ultimate swing voters. Based on Zogby International results (12/19/2001), majority of Muslims polled voted for Clinton in 1996 Bush in 2000 89% voted for Obama in 2008

The tragedy of 911 helped American Muslims realize that they need to be more publicly visible They have become more proactive and aggressive in being noticed doing normal things They began volunteering in other organizations outside of their local Mosques. They have joined civic groups, soup kitchens, PTAs, school boards, etc

The Republican Party was born as a civil rights movement 1854: The republican party was established by anti-slavery activists in opposition to stop the expansion of slavery into the western territories. Smaller Govt, Fiscal Responsibility, Less Taxes What should the American Muslim position be?
