A. Italian fascism was forged by by Benito Mussolini He: bullied his way to a dictatorship by 1925. was determined to make Italy a great nation again at the expense of other countries like Abyssinia (Ethiopia) signed the Rome-Berlin Axis with Germany in 1936.
NAZI B. German fascism - practiced by the Party Adolf Hitler claimed to be able to make Germany a great nation again - a Third Reich. Banned all other political parties in 1933 controlled intellectual and cultural choices locked rebels in work camps Spread nationalist pride taught theory of German master (superior) race culled handicapped & others not useful

C. Japanese militarism and imperialism also led to international conflict. Japan attacked China s industrial region of Manchuria in 1931 Japan s imperial ambitions in the Pacific region (their Co-prosperity sphere ) led to the decision to bomb US navy at Pearl Harbour in December 1941. This triggered the American declaration of war on Japan. Germany then declared war on the US.
2. Weakness of the League of Nations: The League did little about the above mentioned aggression. There were too few strong members. Instead they used the policy of appeasement.
3. The policy of appeasement: Granting wishes to a demanding country to keep peace England, France and Canada used this policy with Germany. Germany was allowed to disobey the Treaty of Versailles - without consequences.
Some of what the appeasers allowed: Beginning in 1933, the German military expanded in secret. By March 1935, Hitler went public on Nazi Germany's military expansion thus breaking the terms of the Treaty of Versailles. England & France learned the Nazis had 2,500 war planes in its Luftwaffe and 300,000 men in its Wehrmacht. - Hitler then announced compulsory military service (conscription) in Nazi Germany, increasing their army to 550,000 men.

B. Canada s Response Initially it was one of avoidance and isolationism. 1937 - Prime Minister King visited Hitler and concluded the German dictator truly loved his fellow man. Canada was still practicing a policy of isolationism. This means staying out of international affairs. during the Great Depression, we tightened immigration policies 10 000 immigrants were deported 1931 - Canada s doors temporarily shut to immigrants 1939 - SS St. Louis sent back from Montreal with 900 Jewish refugees Canada s immigration director said in reference to Jewish refugees, none is too many.
Canada s response... England declared war on Germany on September 3, 1939. Prime Minister King called Parliament together to decide what to do about the war. only one member of Parliament (CCF leader J.S. Woodsworth) was against Canada going to war. A cabinet minister (Lapointe) from Quebec spoke in favour of declaring war but against conscription. King promised his gov t would not conscript soldiers. Canada declared war on Germany on Sept 10, 1939 (7 days later than England).
