President s Column, by Wolfgang Polak Boy, am I ready for summer. It seemed to take much longer than normal for the good flying weather to arrive but it looks like it is here finally. And with summer, the air show season has arrived. Remember, if you re going to Air Venture or to Arlington, bring your pictures and reports to the August meeting so you can tell those who could not make it what they missed. Last month s meeting was off-site at John Castner s house, where he graciously showed off his Sonex project. It s a nice plane with pretty good performance numbers and a well thought-out kit. Good luck, John; I m waiting to get my ride. Anyone else out there with a project to show? Maybe visits like this one get some of the procrastinators back into their workshop. Talking about unfinished projects, you may have heard me talk about James Shelton. James is a former EAA62 president...anyone remember him? The year was 1966. James called me about a month ago and asked for help in selling his Thorp T-18 project. He has spent many years working off plans. Sadly, he is moving into an assisted-living facility and will never get to fly his Thorp. November is still a long ways away, but our bylaws say that we should be thinking about it now. The November meeting will have Chapter elections and we re required to have a nominating committee in place buy July to pick a slate of candidates. Unfortunately, in past years we had an arm-twisting committee instead. Please think about running for office and helping shape the Chapter. Remember, it s your chapter and it s as much fun and excitement as we all make it. Every year we elect the president, vice president, treasurer, secretary and 3 of 6 directors here s your chance to make a difference. Want to help out in some other way? Try recruiting a new member. Our prorated dues are only $20 at the moment and any new Chapter member gets a free six-month membership at EAA national. Not enough of an incentive? Thanks to Konstantin, all new members and those who recruited them will be entered into a raffle for an aviation transceiver. Skycatcher available at Tradewinds The Skycatcher is finally available. We have already delivered two into the local market and have more coming. Trade Winds Aviation could use one for our flight line right away. If you are curious about ownership and a Lease Back arrangement, this could be a great starting point. The airplanes are selling at about $114,500 this year plus options and delivery. If you have any questions contact Terry McGee at 408-729-5100. Major Aviation Events Two of the three major EAA events take place in the month of July. The Arlington Fly-In takes place between July 6 and July 10. The dates for Airventure at Oshkosh are July 25 through July 31. Look at www.arlingtonflyin.org and airventure.org for more details. Cessna Skycatcher Summer Barbecues at Tradewinds Come join Trade Winds Aviation staff for our next summer time barbecue on Friday, July 15 starting at 5:00 PM. It will be a fun time to catch up with fellow flying enthusiasts. Susie Williams will be on hand share about her recent flight to Kansas for the Cessna 172 Club s first National Fly-in. 172 flight Newsletter Editor solos It s about time www.eaa62.org 3

New members Maggie Gales and Marjorie Bachman Max Trescott, wrong-way canopy, and John Castner Wolfgang delivers his comments www.eaa62.org 4

Membership Notes Membership Chairman by Donald Von Raesfeld, Jr. 408-507-0951 We had a good turnout for our June meeting at John Castner s house where he displayed his Sonex project. Rusty grilled hot dogs with the help of Jon Garliepp, as Randy was out of town. After some socializing and dinner, Wolfgang called the meeting to order and took care of Chapter business. John Castner then answered questions about the Sonex project. One of the things that seemed to impress everyone was the flexibility of the canopy. John had the canopy on display with a piece of masking tape marking the front. It did not look like that could be the front as it was too wide. John assured us that it was the front and with the help of Max Trescott they picked up the canopy and pushed it together showing us that it was indeed the front. It was amazing how flexible it was. Many thanks to John for holding the meeting at his home and for showing us his project. As he gets further into the build, I hope he will host another meeting so we can see his progress. Andy Werback has produced a flier to promote Chapter membership, and it is available on our website. Current members, please download the flier and post it wherever you can or hand it out to interested individuals. Thank you, Andy. Konstantin Blank has donated an aviation transceiver to the Chapter. It will be raffled off to one of this year s new members or to any current member this year who has brought in or brings in a new member. Thank you, Konstantine. Welcome to our two newest members to the Chapter: Marjorie Bachman and Maggie Gales. Both attended our last meeting at John s house. Hope to see you at more Chapter 62 meetings. Our next Young Eagles Event will be on July 9 at South County. As always, volunteers are needed. If you can help out flying or as a volunteer on the ground let Russ Todd, our Young Eagles Coordinator, know. Hope to see you there.
