Laffety and opened fo eseach in 1990. James Laffety was bon in Detoit, Michigan in 1938. He gaduated fom Detoit's Cental High School in 1956, eceived a B.A. fom the Univesity of Michigan in 1960, and an LL.D. fom Wayne State Univesity Law School in 1963. Afte admission to the State Ba of Michigan in 1964, he seved fo thee yeas as executive secetay of the National Lawye's Guild, a pogessive ba association. Fom 1967 to 1969 he held the position of Coodinato, Civil Division, Wayne County Neighbohood Legal Sevices. Fom 1969 to 1977, M. Laffety was a patne in the Detoit law flm of Laffety, Reosti, Jabaa, Stickgold, James, Soble and Smith, which specialized in selective sevice/militay law and civil ights. Duing these yeas the fim epesented many of the leading goups and individuals woking in vaious movements fo social change and M. Laffety became one of the nation's most pominent "daft attoneys." Between the yeas of 1969 and 1973, M. Laffety was active in the movement to end U.S. intevention in Vietnam. He seved as chai of the Detoit Coalition to End the Wa Now! and was a founde and a national coodinato of the National Peace Action Coalition, the goup that oganized the lagest demonstations against the U.S. wa in Vietnam. On behalf of this wok he spoke and taveled nationally and aboad. He seved as a pat-time heaing efeee fo the Michigan Civil Rights Commission fom 1972-1973. F"'! l I I \ In 1977, M. Laffety established the law fim of Laffety and Van Dyke in Bimingham, Michigan. In 1979 he oganized the fst banch of the Ameican Civil Libeties Union in Oakland County, Michigan and seved as chai of this banch until 1983. Fom 1979 to 1983 he also oganized and chaied a po-low cost housing goup in Bimingham, Michigan. M. Laffety elocated to New Yok City in 1984, the same yea he was an oganize of the Emegency National Council Against U.S. Intevention in Cental Ameica/the Caibbean. He seved as one of its egional coodinatos until1991. Duing these yeas he also seved on steeing committees of vaious national effots to end U.S. intevention in Cental Ameica/the Caibbean. Fom 1985 to 1988, he taught at the New School fo Social Reseach in New Yok City. Ealy in 1991, he became active in the movement to end U.S. intevention in the Pesian Gulf, seving on the Steeing Committee of the Campaign fo Peace in the Middle East. Pesently, he lives in New Yok City and is employed as the Associate Diecto of the Cente fo Seafaes' Rights of the Seamen's Chuch Institute.
