SS.7.C.1.1 The Enlightenment identify and describe the Enlightenment ideas of separation of powers, natural law, and social contract. Separation of Powers= Three branches, Legislative, Executive and Judicial= MONTESQUIEU Natural Law= There should be laws to protect your natural rights, Life, liberty, property, pursuit of happiness= LOCKE Social Contract= implied agreement, citizens do their obligations and responsibilities (if not there are consequences) and government protects the citizens rights (if not the citizens can alter and abolish their government)= LOCKE

SS.7.C.1.1 The Enlightenment examine how Enlightenment Ideas influenced the Founders beliefs about individual liberties and government. When we were the 13 colonies under British rule. The colonists believed that the King violated their individual liberties. This means that the colonists ability to live as free and independent people was not being protected. Some colonists decided to speak out and they were called the Founding Fathers and they wrote the Declaration of Independence which included ideas about natural law and social contract. individual liberty - a person s ability to be free and independent/having rights

Declaration of Independence We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. (Natural Rights- LOCKE) That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, (Social Contract= LOCKE)

The Constitution (Separation of Powers- Montesquieu) Article I- Legislative Branch Article II- Executive Branch Article III- Judicial Branch Separation of powers leads to checks and balances. Example of Checks and Balances The legislative branch writes bills to become law but they can only become law if the president signs it. He can also veto the bill.
